Hello all. I’m new to PriusChat. I’m wondering if anyone has experienced a sound like this which seems to occur during low speed braking. I describe it as a metallic bump or shudder noise.

I just had my rear brakes redone two months ago fully, and now the fronts, also totally. The bump sound persists even after. Trying to figure this one out.

    Any ideas greatly appreciated.

    Hi

My car is a 2010 with 106,000 miles. Toyota did the brake work.

May or may not be the issue, but one thing to check, if you can manage: chock the front wheels, release the parking brake, raise the rear till the tires are clear, then see how freely they spin. Should be something like this, if they didn't screw up the rear brakes.

The rears are tricky, need to be reassembled with the pattern on the caliper piston face oriented like an "X", and well seated against the brake pads thus. If it does manage to rotate, you'll get a constant drag, bevelled pad wear and scored rotors.

They were not sure at all. I have an audio file but being new to PriusChat I can’t share the DropBox link. I apparently need 4 posts...? It is a strange bump - a hollow sound that only happens with slow speed braking.

    Owned since new.

Yes, that would be about right. I have to log four posts, then I can post a link to the sound.

Can you pinpoint at what second the sound occurs?

reading your first post again, was the sound there before the rear brakes were redone, or after?

I've just listened and heard nothing out of the ordinary. But I didn't use headphones.

I once did a little enhancement in Audacity for somebody's weird-sound recording, made it easier to pind down. But I'm not where I can conveniently do that just now. Maybe somebody else can?

I had this sound before recently doing the front brakes. It developed about a month after the rears were done.

In that service, they installed new pads, saved the existing calipers and machined the rotors.

seems to pinpoint the rears, almost like something wasn't connected properly and came loose. i'm not an expert on what parts go in there and how they are connected.
menders X alignment is important, but i would think the sound would have developed right away.

maybe take it to another dealer and have them inspect it?
