    Hi guys,
I have a P2 and after oil change (1th time DYI as seen on YTB video :) I noticed a bit strange engine sound while the engine hood was open. Is that sound normal? Usually I do not notice much of engine sitting as driver inside the car. Any feedback appreciated.

    thx in advance

    P.S: P2 @ 194.000 km since 150.000km converted to LPG ....

I think you should inspect the engine coolant pump and the idler pulley.

engine coolant pump has been replaced (during Toyota recall campaign) so I really doubt it should be a problem. Regarding idler pulley - you think this sound comes from ?

The recall was for the inverter coolant pump, not engine coolant pump

my mistake you are right it was inverter coolant pump replacement.... Your recomendation? How bad / risky is it to drive the car now until a suitable repair date will be available? Can I drive some 1000-5000km until the repair without any big risks or better not drive it at all until repair?

It is hard to say, without knowing what is causing the abnormal sound. I suggest you have this checked out in the very near future. Once you know what is causing the problem and post that, then we can discuss how long repair can be deferred.

    Hi Patrick,
thanks again for our support. I have emailed this recording to my Toy-Mechanics, who also drives same P2 himself, I just hope he is not in holiday. In the mean time until proper diagnostics - I will better use another car of mine to minimize any risks...

Unfortunately my Toy-Mechanics seems to be in holiday this week. So I was only able to make a new recording with higher quality (before just recorded the sound with my LG G3 mobile phone). New recording P2 engine sound at open hood is made by Roland CS10-EM binaural mic (earphone-mic combo). If you gentlement hear to the sound again, please optionally with good earphones than you can hear also the binaural effect. I was moving my head from left to right and via versa trying to locate the place where the strange sound comes from virtually "sticking my nose very near to the engine as possible even touching it". I have a feeling the specifically strange sound comes more loudly from the left side (as standing before the car and where the passanger sits) than from the right side....

*binaural sound recording* EARPHONES ONLY ****

Enybody knows somebody more experienced or specialised on Toyota engines (P2 engines :- ) who may listen and tell more by hearing (earphones only !!!)) to he new recording about the possible source and cause of the problem??

again thx very much in advance

Please can any owner of P-II make a good stereo-recording on running engine while hood open and post here for comparison? Please place the mics very near the engine.
It would be really very helpfull for me.

Thank you very much in advance

2Day I visited a Toy-Mechanics, he suggests it is really a engine coollant pump (90% probablility) exactly as Patrick mentioned before. Labour takes about 4-5 hours to change it. Unfortunately he is leaving for holiday again so I can bring the car in 2 weeks again for detailed analysis/pump replacement.
Though 194.000km should not be too much for the original coolant pump, is it?

Your coolant pump lasted much longer than many, and in fact was left in service way too long if it was starting to make noise.
It probably is leaking coolant at the bearing. Look for a pinkish stain at the inside of the pulley and upon the AC compressor housing.

It takes about an hour to do the engine coolant pump, 4 to 5 hours works to be the time my 12 year old would take to do the job....while playing pokemon go in between.

Actual book time may be closer to 2 hours, but not 4 hours

YouTube has many videos on this, and there are guides here on priuschat. You don't need the mechanic

    Solved: Repair is done:
Coolant pump inclusive coolant pump fan-belt has been changed. The Bearings of the coollant pump were nearly dead, so I was lucky to change still in time.
Futhermore the non-original Bosch spark plugs did not last 70TKM one of them was also nearly dead. They have been replaced with more expensive but more durable and more recomended DENSO sparkplugs..
Now the engine works fine again, if I will manage I can make new recording of the engine sound for comparison soon...
