No, what counts with the ladies is how many of them you can use in new and interesting ways. Who cares what the guys think?

 

In the above sentence, does "them" refer to ladies, or tools?

 

I'm so confused, I thought "them" = tools?

 

I picked mine up at Parts Source, and it has had plenty of use over 5 years on both my Prius and FJ. I think the secret is to not overly tighten the oil filter

 

I *always* use PVC gloves when I handle POL's and chemicals.

There are serious long-term health risks to using bare hands around many chemicals and petroleum products, especially used oil

I once tried that goopy stuff you wipe on your hands - claims to be like a glove. The stuff feels so weird, I'd only consider it if I had to perform an Emergency Proctological Exam on the roadside

 

Just finished changing my oil and came in here and got on PC. I'm on my 3rd filter wrench. First one was the stamped sheet metal variety, POS just slipped around the filter. Second one was the molded plastic type (manufacturer calls it "graphite" but I guess they don't know what that is). Tried using that one today and heard a loud snap under there, it cracked in half... and no not cold, 65 F. It only lasted 3 oil changes. Ran down to Autozone and got the $7 metal mechanical squeezer one, initially it just spun around the filter too. I had to angle it so the corners dug into the filter and then the filter broke free. The filter was a Fram with the textured grip, but there's no room to get a firm grip with your hands. I always use old oil on the seal on the new filter, so don't know why its always so hard to remove them even if hand tightened. And I ALWAYS get the oil running down my arm when removing the filter. At least that orange stuff works good at getting the carcinigous oil off. Could be worse... My Nissan PU is impossible to change without out it being on a rack, sometimes I think the oil change places give up and leave the old filter on it, you can't see it to know if its new.

 

I use nitrile disposable gloves for oil changes. As Patrick and Jayman noted, its best to avoid contact with used oil.

 

Fram is not the best oil filter anymore.

Cut the Toyota and Fram apart(hacksaw around the base where it contacts the engine) you will see the difference. Very little filter media in the Fram.

50 years ago Fram was the #1 filter to buy.

Yikes ,the Toyota filter is only about $5.00.

Buy the Toyota.

I use a 16 inch channel lock and grip from the bottom and turn gently. Works every time. Doesn't anyone use high grade petroleum oil anymore?

 

Do these filters include a gasket for the oil pan ? My dealer sells the pair for about $5 - $6 I think.

Good point, you have to pay extra for the gaskets. So if you can buy both for $5, qty. 1 each, this is good.

 

I bought a case of filters + gaskets from Toyota of Dallas:

So, with shipping, I paid $4.89 for each filter and gasket.

 

Hmmm, when I buy a filter at my dealership they throw in the gasket. I'm ok with paying $6 for a filter
