The CrossTrak is nothing like the C-MAX so two different markets.

The current AWD top mileage vehicle is Subaru's own Impreza at 30 combined. CrossTrak is second with 28 mpg. The CrossTrak is a high road clearance version of the Impreza. Odd that Subaru didn't choose the higher mileage Impreza as mpg is going to be deciding factor between folks buying the CrossTrak hybrid 35 mpg, the Impreza 30 mpg or the standard CrossTrack 28 mpg. The CrossTrak is already $3K more than the Impreza, the hybrid likely $6K more. It really is going to have to hit 40 mpg combined to be competitve within the Subaru line up.

XV is small SUV, it is not an Euro-Style MPV like CMAX or Prius v.

Its Rav4 competitor basically... nothing to do with C-Max at all.

And C-Max's MPG is so good, even C-Max cant reach it

    :D

1 more mpg on the highway in 3 in the city is not too exciting in 2013.

I can't disagree with you there, the car would be much better with hsd + eAWD, but I don't think toyota really wants to give subaru their best toys.

"... mileage ratings to 28 mile per gallon in the city, 34 on the highway ..."

Dang, way short of the hype again.

I wonder how that AWD Volvo V60 Plugin Hybrid is doing.

Since its europe only we only get their mileage ratings, which don't compare to ours. They say 1.8L/100km on the combined test in hybrid mode, but I have no idea how much electricity gets used. It is a $70k car though, with a very expensive diesel phev drive train.

sure they do... for price.. they dont compete at all, and toyota is biggest not FHI owner and already said and sold technology to direct competitors.

but japanese companies are weird, subaru wants to prove it has technology so it spends money on rubbish like this.

Sure, they should just do nothing and then as electrification of transportation advances in premium markets they'll fail.

They have the right segment, but right now their system obviously isn't good enough. Hopefully they won't try to charge a high premium. And if they're serious about makig money in hybrids they certainly shouldn't use HSD because HSD is clearly limited in towing capability. The first company that produces a 4WD hybrid system that can scale up effectively and economically will make a lot of money.

I'm pretty disappointed with this model also, especially considering the gas mileage of the AWD Volvo V60 hybrid. This hybrid Subaru is 300lbs heavier than the gas engine model and only gets slightly better gas mileage--and that around town.

It's a loser because it doesn't compete with Prius? Well, what does? It's their first attempt at a hybrid. Subaru's reputation is built by it's AWD not mpg. It's also quite foolish of anyone to compare this vehicle to a Volvo hybrid or even an RX or HyHi because they are larger and much more expensive.

CrossTrek is a loser because it doesn't compete with anything. It's mileage is about the same as AWD Subaru Impreza for $5K less. It is has no niche in the marketplace.

The e-4wd will not work more than 37 mph. Wonder if that will be an issue with people wanting to drive faster than 37 mph in awd mode.

I can imagine now... Prius drive 35 mph when everyone driving 55 mph. :D

Another consideration is that Subaru stresses that they have a symmetrical AWD system. Meaning power is always going to both ends. Most of the others, including Toyota, are asymmetrical. The vehicle is FWD until traction loss is detected. The current eAWD on the Highlander hybrid couldn't maintain symmetrical AWD without a hit to fuel economy do to the conversion losses keeping the rear motor spinning.

It will be interesting to see how it sells.

    Compare Side-by-Side

I'm sure subaru is trying to take sales from the small SUVs, which sell much better than it. How does its 4wd system differ from the cr-v and escape? A lot will be determined by price subaru charges for the hybrid system, and I'm guessing, but only guessing, that toyota wanted to charge subaru a price it was not willing to pass along.

I included the top two sellers in 4wd configuration, and the other european tall car hybrid. Last month the escape and cr-v sold over 55,000 between them, the subu 4688, the c-max 3769 (hybrid+energi). I am not sure what hybrid system would help subaru eat into those cute ute sales. The link has estimated user and epa figures, YMMV.
