Subtle window - door motion

    When I close the window and just as it reaches the top, my knee feels a slight bowing of the door. This happens in the front seat for both the driver and passenger doors. It isn't a big displacement but it is enough I can feel it.

    The effect is it makes the door seem 'less solid' than a vehicle that can close the window without this slight displacement. It also suggests the window motor may be stronger than needed, at least at the closing.

    I believe the NHW20 had some 'window adjustment' and a procedure to 'recalibrate' the window closing. Has anyone done the window 'closing adjustment' with the NHW20? I haven't read all of my owners manual, yet, so I don't know if this has been covered. Heck, I don't even know if the 2010 has some way to 'soften' the final glass closing.

    I feel this in my Gen2 as well and assume it's some flex in the inner frame that the panel mounts to.

    I have experienced this in several other cars. Better to bend than break.

    My 2000 Corvette did this every time you rolled up the window. There is an alignment issue with the window tracking or door in relation to the notch in the upper door frame or the window roll up is not near it's maximum height but the door frame won't allow it to go any higher into the trac. The window will then continue to try and roll up but since it is out of room it will bow out the door frame to allow for that extra 1/2" or so up window that "needed" to be rolled up.

    This may be just a part of the design so I'm not saying something is wrong.

    Electric window regulators generally don't have any sort of limit
    switches or stop sensing, they just slam the mechanism into the
    hard limit [aka weatherstripping at the top end] and hope the
    users notices that the window is closed. You can see this in
    the dimming of lights [e.g. voltage drop] if you hold the switch
    any longer. So yes, the motor is exerting its full stalled
    torque against whatever it's mounted on, and car doors aren't
    rigid objects.

    In the 2010 - there are hall effect sensors near both limits of traffic to allow the lower speeds at both ends (for noise, prevent "slamming", etc.).

    Hobbit, the 2010 windows are "variable-speed". The only other Toyota with this is the Lexus LS460 and LS600h L.

    When you wind up the window, they slow down when they're within an inch or two to soften the thud when it hits the door frame.

    Do you need to set the auto limits by holding the switch up after the window reaches the top?

    I feel this also in my '06. No real biggie for me, and it's never been a problem of any kind. I doubt the wife has even noticed. :D She's just getting the hang of the pulse and glide thing after 3 years, but God bless her, she's trying!!

    I get this movement in my work car, a Holden Commodore. I thought this was the case but delayed posting until I checked to make sure.

    Actually, my production model didn't end up having this feature on it. I was wondering if any other Prius Connection folks had noticed this as well in their own 2010s?

    Can't say I've looked for it, but I also have not noticed this happening. Seems to be pretty must straight up and down.

    My 1995 Tercel has a very advanced system for reducing the thud of the windows. I crank them up quickly to within an inch of the top and then crank slowly until they stop.

    Funny enough my 1983 tercel AWD wagon had a similar system although I would assume slightly more primative in design. This also carried over to the larger 1990 SV21 Camry wagon.

    I'll have to check on this but initially I didn't notice any slowing at either limit, despite being well documented in the NCF. Perhaps it's a subtle change.

    well i have noticed that the windows do close with a lot of pressure which makes me think that a few people here are wrong and an adjustment might be in order. they definitely close harder than my SPM which i notice does slow down just before it closes. the 2010 does not. at first i attributed it to new windows, new motor, etc but now i am not so sure

    the window must be computer controlled to a point so it knows about when the windows are closed. sensing pressure before this point insures no major damage to extremities of human occupants. now this makes so much sense, i took it for granted that is how new electric windows worked. mundane low tech items like garage and "Safeway" doors work this way and do so due to lawsuits. so are we saying that car windows are different?

    In my car the rear windows slow down just before reaching the top or bottom, but the front windows do not.

    Anybody else with non-slowing fronts?

    According to the owners manual the windows have an anti-trap feature--are you saying you tested it and it doesn't work?

    I paid close attention yesterday. It would seem the front windows don't slow.

    Son-of-a-gun - NCF does say this is rear windows only.
