That would be ideal but very expensive.

I think the NHTSA made the right choice testing 2002-2007 Camry's because they have the highest number of complaints.

What I don't agree with is the extrapolation used by the media (and Prius fanatics) to conclude that ALL Toyota cars are now safe because they tested a few old Camry's.

    Read it again:

"High RPM continued when driver was outside the vehicle"

Yeah right, you conveniently removed a huge chunk of data to support your theory. Did you also remove the spike data from the other manufacturers? That would be slightly more accurate, but still inaccurate due to the reasons I've listed regarding the validity of spike complaints.

And clarify your position on spike complaints.

Do you think everyone that posts a complaint during a publicity spike is liar?

Most aren't liars, but many are mislead. People often believe something that isn't true, which is different than lying. Publicity influences people's beliefs, which is why companies pay large amounts of money for advertising. If you need a good example, look no further than the vaccination/autism link. That has been clearly demonstrated to be false, but the publicity convinced many people otherwise. Many still believe, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

The same thing happens with SUA reports. Someone steps on the wrong pedal and scares themselves. They think "Wow, that was weird. I wonder what happened?" and it goes no further. If they read about SUA in the paper, they think "That's what happened. My car is a death trap" and go on line to post a complaint. Publicity clearly increases the number of complaints.

Not the words I read. Is your position so weak that you need to distort what others say?

    You tell me.

A person stepped on the gas instead of the brake. Great driver or horrible driver?

A person thinks they stepped on the brake but really stepped on the gas. Smart person or stupid person?

It's what evpv excels at! Look, you can't prove nothing is wrong, or might go wrong, with any car! You can only prove a flaw that you find! This is what the study showed, no flaws could be found that would cause the cars to accelerate out of control! evpv and his buddy say the chance it might exist outweighs all other data and studies, no matter what, and that's what annoys us! The wheels might fall off an Accord, I'm sure somewhere, sometime, that might even have happened, but I don't go on Honda forums and try to convince everyone that Accords are dangerous vehicles because of that possibility!

So it's perfectly OK to proclaim all cars that use lug nuts safe because no wheels fell off during a test on 6 cars that use centerlock hubs? Of course not.

The Prius is wildly different and much more complex than a 2002-2007 Camry. Does anyone here actually believe that the ETCS-i is the same on an old Camry and a Gen 3 Prius? Does the fact that the Prius has two motor generators, a power inverter, epicyclic gearing, ECVT, a NiMh battery, regenerative braking, brake stroke simulator, etc mean anything? It should. Extrapolating results of a test on Camry to a Prius is nonsense. Junk science. Fantasy.

Absolutely. Media works both ways. When the investigation was going on, ALL Toyota cars took the hit and were seen as "unsafe".

Have you ever considered that this week's reports addressed this issue, and "identified at least three reasons for such increases in reporting."?

Of course, you mention only the one that supports your stubborn intransigence, not the two that conflict with it.

"Thus, while field report data appear to be the most logical source for evaluating whether a particular class of vehicles exhibits an unusually high rate of an undesirable driving event (e.g., UA), intrinsic flaws and limitations of these databases render such analyses inconclusive, and qualitative at best."

Not any old Camry -- those with an electronic throttle control system. The conclusions regarding that system component extrapolate to other models using the system. I feel like I am talking to a 6 year old.

Even our Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, is guilty on both counts.

Where were you hiding out a year ago? This was extremely hard to miss for anyone who paid any attention whatsoever to the runaway Toyota feeding frenzy.

And not just any old Camry with electronic throttle control.

All 6 cars -- three different generations of electronic throttle control, in 4 and 6 cylinders -- were purchased from customers submitting complaints to NHTSA.
