Survey: Oil consumption vs build dates

2011 Prius III (purchased new)
Build date: 01/11
171,000 miles (Mainly highway driving in high desert of Southern California)
Burns no oil (I changed the oil 3 times in the first 1500 miles. (250 mi, 500 and 1500))
No problems: original brakes, original wheel bearings, I did clean EGR once
Original tires (Yoko's) went 105,000 miles.
Oil changed every 5000 mi with Mobil 1, 0-20W and Mobil 1 filter
I use the "0-20W" whether it's Summer, 112 deg F. or Winter, 20 deg F.

 

Kind of a flush?

 

Yes! I believe it works on most every ICE. At least in my mind.
However, I recently purchased a new motorcycle and did the same procedure and it does burn a little oil (at 5500 miles). But it's the anomaly.

 

Oil change at 119k. 11k miles on this oil change. 5 Quarts in. 2.75 Quarts out. Thats about 2qt even consumption for 10k miles. No engine braking used... BUT a lot of 100 mph interstate driving. For like three hours sustained. So it looks like oil consumption goes up a bit when load is increased. Only 0.25 quarts off the stick though so im impressed. Looking like 5 quarts and a filter is a great way to go.

 

Also I'd like to see people dump their oil back into their 5 quart jugs and start measuring oil consumption as there isn't a such thing as perfect ring seal. There will be oil consumption.

 

I catch the drain oil with a large funnel on a No-Spill container, which has gradations down the side. Means no cleaning out drain pans (if you do), and is handy for checking oil consumption. Here's our daughter's Pilot drain, spec quantity is 4.3 liters, she never checks it:

Just curious....how is the mpg while driving 100 mph?

100 mph? Hmmm, . . . did Arkansas disband their Highway Patrol or are you one?

 

I'm impressed that our Prii can drive 100 mph sustained on the highway. I've hit 100 mph going down a steep mountain pass without taxing the engine (gliding with the gas pedal lightly pressed, preventing a traction battery charge) and it was smoother than I anticipated.

 

A lot of prayer, luck, and a Valentine V1 is all you need. That and well it seems like most people ignore Prius in general when looking for speeding cars in general... I kid you not.
In my old 2010 Mustang GT with no cats, loud mufflers, pushing like 110-115db at full tilt boy you dont understand how many cops would follow me. But even then pretty much from 18-21 when I sold the car I went 95 mph 200 miles all the way from my hometown to college and was only ever caught once. Ended up asking for a civil penalty and just paying the 170 fine and moving on. Uh... I guess to show how quick that is the trip is 3 hr 10 min and I could regularly make it in 2 hr 15 - 20 min. Even though road construction or non 70 mph zones.
Cops here really aren't using laser so that helps. Seems like they have it but for the most part they prefer to sit in the median and blast k or ka. Only on occasion does a smart one flick it on and off to radar.
Only time ive ever seen a guy actually have a laser gun in his hand I was going 95 in the Prius, had my eyes peeled, saw him in like a split second, and slammed on the brakes and got it down to 69 mph. He pulled out slowly and followed me for like half a mile way back but ended up fading off. I honestly think he didn't believe his gun when he saw it. He for sure zapped me with that laser gun though. hahaha
For the most these highways im running good lord are so friggin empty.... so it makes it easier.

 

Its not bad I usually just end up having to smooth out the hilly sections so im not riding the rev limiter the whole time, but instead if the hill is really big ill stay under like 4200 and balance out the up and down hills so I feel less like the motor is going to pop. But on flats and smaller inclines its cake.
