I don't know if it's the low tones of my voice, but My Nav Sys. post coffee Icons when I ask for Mexican Restaurant and Thai restaurant Icons when I ask for fast food. I've even tried a high pitch British voice but it does nothing more than give my wife one more reason to laugh at me. Any ideas?

Maybe Tabasco thinks you need some coffee. Have you been nodding off? :p

There are definately issues with some voices. The best advice I can give is to NOT try too hard to enunciate well. It seems to recognize patterns/rhythmes rather than words/specific sounds.

Run it together as you would in normal speach. Remember that the microphone is above your head and a little to the right..by the sunglass holder. Make sure there are as few background sounds as possible...no kids talking/wife nagging/gas expulsions/etc.

Voice control on my wife's accord works perfectly for me, but gives my son fits. Exactly the reverse on my dad's new Prius.

Manny -- speak softly to the area around the rear view mirror... that microphone is so sensitive... and it responds to quiet talk. :D

Did you get the excel list of the vocal commands?

Speaking softly to the navigation lady does help. As my wife said, women don't like to be yelled at. It was kind of fun at first, but I haven't used voice control for a couple of month.

Hopefully my wife won't think I'm having an affair with an automobile. I downloaded the excell sheet and things like changing the temperature or turning on the stereo work about 60% of the time. I figure the car was so smart that it realized I gained 10 pounds this summer and it wants me to go back on Atkins

anyway, keep at it, manny. i'm sure you'll despise each other in no time

Well, I've said it a few times but when I first got my Prius I had no idea what it could and coudn't recognize so the conversation went like this:

    ME: Hello
PRIUS: System is showing coffee house icons
    ME: B*itch, I said HELLO
PRIUS: System is showing hotel icons
ME: Oh, first you don't listen, then you want to buy me coffee and get "down" No way!
    PRIUS:Setting home as destination

I guess she got tired of me too...

But really, the things I've noticed.... No particularly loud talking, DEAD SILENCE in the background or close to it (tell the wife and kids to cram it for a sec, windows up especially if high speeds and maybe even turn the fan on the a/c down if that's pretty high) Speak clearly but don't over-enunciate like it's retarded...

    That should help ya.

all new voice recognition systems uses a system called "natural speaking" where phrases are recognized instead of individual words.

older software had to use what was known as "discrete dictation" where a pause was inserted between each word making one sound like a robot or something.

also keep in mind that the microphone is very sensitive and distortion is the rule not the exception. try speaking as quietly as you can without making the hissing sound that comes about when whispering. you may find that the system will understand you much better.

I've been using my natural tone of voice (or sorta like HAL from Space Odessy). I've had much greater success. Thanks for the assistance.

Let's just hope the Prius doesn't seal us in the car and cut off the air.

    hahahaha

as comedian john pinette says in a routine about gaseous bodily functions, "i had to stop farting. i was losing friends. and i don't mean i couldn't find them, i mean they were breaking windows trying to get out of the car..." (paraphrased for brevity)

Manny, does your voice have a cuban localized dialect? Or, a texan one perhaps? I've always been curious about voice recognition systems and their interaction with persons not from Ohio...

I haven't developed my Texas twang yet, but my voice is rather low when I'm having a normal conversation.
