Technician had to break oil filter cap then charged me for a new one

In fairness, what worry or issue could crop up for an oil filter cap inside of 3k miles?

 

I also put on an aluminum oil filter holder purchased on ebay, on both our Prius and Corolla.

The added benefit over the plastic one is that the metal one stops turning after a certain point and cannot be overtightened like the plastic one.

When I replaced the plastic cap on the Prius, I couldn't remove it because it was overtightened. Even with a breaker bar and a pipe over that to extend it, I could not break it loose. I ended up using a corded 1/2 inch impact wrench to bust it free. That impact gun was really wailing on it, I thought I was going to shear or damage the bolts holding the oil filter mounting plate to the engine block before that plastic piece would come loose.

I highly recommend the aluminum filter housing replacement.

Or spin-on conversion, fix Toyota’s boondoggle. That’s how they voted, commencing sometime through model year 2017. Through Amayama, all the parts were around $65-70 CDN for me, plus $35 shipping.

 

Aluminum housing (generic) on eBay was around $15 with shipping.

Not everybody can change their own oil.
HOWEVER (comma!!) everybody DOES make mistakes.

If I remember the OP, you've been taking the G3 there for a while now, and this business did "make it right" when they made their mistake.

I'd call it good, personally.

Your car is over a decade old now, and there are some things out there that are a lot more scary than a $60 oil filter cap.

Make sure that you're keeping up with all of the other maintenance items for your G3....like myself....it's not a spring chicken anymore.....

 

That's an easy one. We all make mistakes. Handling them well is what makes the difference. They stumbled, but fixed it. I'd stick with them.

 

The initial concern was the different filter media part number for the filter itself. However, the filters are identical in every measurement. The Scion filter comes with the plastic drain spout for the filter housing. Not necessarily needed on when mounted on the Prius.

 

Yes, the reason the plastic drain spout isn't needed on the Prius is that the filter is mounted horizontally, vs vertically on the Scion.

It was torqued like there is no tomorrow. I sell a lot of those. Rarely at the service dept. except if the car had an oil change at a small shop before. The thing is, the O-Ring does seal the thing. The is no need to screw that that much..

 

They overtightened it, they should eat it.

Apologies. At my dealership “eat it” pretty much means pay for the repair.

 

It is not the fault of the guy trying to remove it, but it's the fault of whoever overtightened it. You need to pay for it because you took it to a different place this time. If you had taken it to the old place, they would have paid for it.

In that case, it's their fault and responsibility to pay for it. The oil-filter caps are designed to last forever if they are properly tightened.

 

I thought the controversy had moved on to whether they should eat it.

 

The US prices are steep. When I did the conversion to spin-on, all-in price was just under $80 USD.

 

It's interesting that Canadian parts are shipped from the UAE! That probably doesn't include the Canadian sales tax. It's about the same price here—$73.66 plus 10.25% tax for the bracket. Remember that the prices may have increased since you bought it.
