Techstream EGR Valve Blockage Data

    Well, all attempts failed.

    However, we've now begun a 3-4,000 mile loops trip down to Southern TX and back. A few hours in and the test completed!

    15kPa. (200k miles. Just finished cleanup of 100% clogged EGR. And IM. And new plugs, new gaskets in valve cover...

    Adding my results for comparison.

    2013 Prius 3 (purchased MAR2022 with 80,111 miles. One owner car, documented changed oil every 5,000 miles. I changed the oil at 85,000 miles. I checked the oil level before and after oil change, no discernible difference.) I've not had the opportunity to check/clean the EGR valve, pipe, cooler and intake manifold, nor install the OCC I purchased.

    That's a good data point. Given that your 21.52 kPa result is similar to what many of us get right after a thorough cleaning, it looks like you'll get to fill your calendar for a good while yet with things that are more fun than EGR cleanings.

    You might want to check the result a few more times in the coming weeks. Sometimes the number bounces around a bit, so that way you'd know if you had, say, 21 once and a bunch of 15s or 16s, or, you know, a bunch of 20s and 21s and one 15.

    My result
    Before cleaning EGR cooler (I have previously cleaned the EGR valve and IM). 16,07kPa
    And after the EGR cooler cleaning 20,17kPa

    Thanks for the result! I trust your mileage is around 160,000 km (100,000 miles), per what you posted earlier here?

    Yes, mileage is exact is 156,000km (around 98,000 miles).
    Before result is not bad, but the EGR cooler was exhaust pipe side about 80% blocket:).

    Checked the EGR flow again today:
    min: 0,97 kPa
    value: 20,52 kPa

    Actually I have not expected a value over 20 - the spread of values is growing ;)

    I can not edit the post above, so a new one.

    I looked up the last two tests too and here is the data:
    The min value is in all three the same: 0,97 kPa
    The max value is by all Priuses the same (I think): 655,35 kPa

    The actual value of my Prius:

    DD.MM.YY ;)

    15.05.2022: 19,94 kPa
    22.05.2022: 20,64 kPa
    05.06.2022: 20,52 kPa

    So, it seems, the spread is not really very big, and actually not growing ;)
    A max difference of 0,7 kPa between highest and lowest value till now, the average is 20,37 kPa at this moment.

    I will still keep an eye on this values :)

    Since cleaning my EGR, IM and pipes, replacing the PCV and adding a catch can 5 monhts and 7k miles ago i've wondered if I cleaned my cooler well enough. Finally figured out how to do the test and got 16.4kpa. Based on the different values reported in this thread what are the thoughts on if I should leave it alone for now or pull and clean it again?

    I actually bought a cooler from a junkyard car for $30 a while back and finally started cleaning it to have ready when i decide mine needs to be done again. It was completely blocked to the point that after 3 days and multiple hours long soaks alternating 2 cans of brake cleaner, 2 cans of oven cleaner and a round with the pressure washer I finally threw in the towel on it.

    We've kind of been seeing values in the 19 to 21 kPa range right after a thorough cleaning. But you'll also find, if you pull the test result repeatedly after different driving, you can have a cluster of results all pretty close but with occasional outliers a few kPa out of the cluster. 16.4 would not be unheard of. You might want to get a few more results and see if they are staying around that, or that was an outlier and they're mostly higher.

    If it's not an outlier, then maybe it's a little lower than what we're used to for a fresh cleaning job. Is it low enough to fret about, or put yourself through the job again? Judgment call. We really don't have data showing how low a value should qualify as urgent (if, indeed, any value should). So that'll be a personal judgment of what you're comfortable with and how obsessive you are.

    Another option would be to leave it alone until the next time your schedule calls for EGR cleaning, and see if you can get it even cleaner then.

    If you had taken the same value before you cleaned, you would then be able to look at how significantly you had improved the situation, rather than just fretting over less-than-perfect.

    Thanks for the detailed reply ChapmanF! I wish I had known about the ability to see the flow values before I did the cleaning so I had a before and after to compare.

    As often as I can, when I see threads where somebody is thinking about doing EGR cleaning, I post the suggestion to get the flow numbers first, and then again after. I'm sure I miss some, but it's mentioned in oodles of EGR threads around here.

    The weird thing, it still seems to be that every time somebody is new to the idea and searching the forum about it, they must just always be finding only the threads where it isn't mentioned....

    Last year I did half of EGR job (IM, pipe and PCV valve) and since then I'm in 18-19's with occasional drop to 15-16's.

    That's my data. If it's good or bad God knows (or Toyota :D).

    The actual value of my Prius:

    The average is 20,27 kPa at this moment.
    Max value difference from the average is 0,37 kPa.
    The difference between lowest and highest value is 0,7 kPa.

    The max value is by all Priuses the same (I think): 655,35 kPa

    I will still keep an eye on this values :)

    I finally have EGR restriction test result readings, from the Autel A519 scanner I recently bought and am struggling to update, unsuccessfully so far . At least it's functional for this test, as-is.

    Test value: 18.92 kPa
    Minimum: 0.91
    Maximum: 655.35

    I hope that's respectable for a 2011 Prius with unmolested original EGR cooler and 131441 miles showing on the odometer, and means removing the cooler isn't urgent yet.. I have a spare from ebay that I've cleaned out.
    I'll check this monitor data again soon. We have ample downhill coasting opportunities here, whenever the car decides to repeat the test.
    I cleared the intake manifold EGR passages 13355 miles ago.

    Looks quite respectable to me. Freshly cleaned seems to end up around 20 to 22.

    The last one is read two weeks after a highway trip with speeds around 140 kmh - I forgot to read it after the trip...

    As one sees, the last min value is 0,95 kPa, so it is not always the same (not always 0,97 kPa) ;)

    The max value is by all Priuses the same (I think): 655,35 kPa

    I will still keep an eye on this values :)

    Right ... computer-geekish readers will recognize that value as "the largest value you can have in an unsigned 16-bit field scaled by two decimal places", put there by Toyota as a way of saying "we really don't care how high this value goes, only how low."

    Can anybody help me to set up custom PID for EGR Monitor using following data in Torque Pro app:

    MID:$31 TID:$bd
    - EGR Monitor Bank 1
    Max: 655.34998kPa Min: 0.99kPa
    Test result value: XX.XXkPa
    PASS/FAIL

    I am used to add PIDs in Torque app but in this case I couldn’t made it. Mainly I added pid with formula, header, long name and short name.

    How do I proceed in this case?
