Techstream help

    I ran a Health Check on my 02 and I see the main codes on the results screen. How do I get the subcodes?

    If there are any sub-codes, there will be a snowflake icon to the left of the code. Click on this and it will bring up the freeze frame data which will have the sub-code(s) on it. There could be up to 5 sub-codes.

    This post has some images to illustrate this.

    Even without subcodes there is good info.
    What are the cars symptoms?
    What codes are being thrown?

    Do I still have to have it hooked up to the car to open the snowflakes or can I do it after it's unhooked?

    What problems are you having with your Prius?
    Why did you want /need to do a scan?

    Long story. New trans & ICE. Ran fine for a while them a light show on the dash. Starts and runs for about 20 seconds or so before dying. I don't have the codes with me.

    If it only "runs" for 20 seconds or so, it actually never really started.

    The big battery gives power to the electric motor, the electric motor spins up the gas engine. The gas engine spins because of the inertia, and is supposed to fire up and take over.

    Sounds like the gas engine never actually fires up and so it can't take over.

    If you attempt to start more than few times without the gas engine taking over you will likely drain the hybrid battery too low. I have seen this happen with as few as 5 or so failed attempts.

    Have you tried to start it more than 5 times?

    If you have drained the hybrid battery too low, you will have to use a high voltage charger to charge it back up before making any more start attempts.

    If you know the hybrid battery is charged enough then you will want to do a few other things first to increase your chance of successful startup.

    You can use techstream to see battery voltage and State of Charge.
    Report what yours currently show.

    Back to the basics: Fuel, spark, air.

    Confirm there is gas in the car.
    Clean MAF.
    Clean throttle body.
    Sop up any extra oil out of the intake manifold.
    Confirm fuel pressure.
    Have a can of starter fluid handy, and use it to help start the car.
    Note whether or not it stays running when your remove starter fluid from the mix.

    Thank you for the help. I does start and the ICE stays running for a while. I just cleared all codes and started it again and it ran for about 45-60 seconds. The lights didn't come on until after about 30 seconds. When the lights came on the idle was kind of up & down until it died. The only code that showed after that was a P3100 with a 136 in #1 and 137 in #2. I looked up what they point to but what should be my next move? Is it possible that maybe something came loose from the engine replacement?

    Is there enough fuel? How many bars on gas gauge?

    Does it stay running if you use starter fluid? If so, then maybe it's a fuel delivery issue.

    Try the other things I mentioned.
    At least clean the MAF. That's easy.
    And sopping up the oil off the air intake is only a few bolts/nuts more to remove.

    Tank is full. MAF & throttle body were just cleaned. I have not tried starter fluid as I know it starts and runs and dies when the lights come on from the codes.

    Does it die from the codes or does the codes come when it dies. Chicken and egg.

    Is the throttle body getting correct voltage?
    If you try to open the butterfly when the car is on does it resist you?

    It runs fine until the lights come on and then it starts idling unevenly and dies. The throttle body is fine.

    I thought you could find everything on the internet. There is nothing on these codes. My next step is to climb under and look for any loose or unhooked wires from the engine/trans swap.

    Those codes are covered on pages DI-229 and -230 in my (2001, paper) repair manual, page numbers might be a little different in a 2003 book. If you pull it up online at techinfo.toyota.com, I don't know if it has the same page numbers as the paper books, but it should be the first section for P3100 in the hybrid vehicle control diagnostics section.

    It shows a troubleshooting procedure that basically starts by looking for opens or shorts in the GO circuit between the ECM and HV ECU, then crank or cam sensor problems, then maybe the ECM itself if no other problem was found.

    Out of interest, does it say what the GO circuit is? Is GO an acronym?
