    Tesla has engineered and built exactly two cars so far.
    I would certainly hope that a company the size and history of Toyota builds more reliable cars.

    I have spent less time at the service shop in over 120,000 miles of driving a Tesla than I did in 60,000 miles driving a Prius.
    I'll take the Tesla package any day.

    No, the i8 is no comparison. The closest comparison is the Audi A7.

    Is this because of fewer repairs needed or because one has concierge roadside assistance or no need for oil changes or other?

    The i8 is more of a competitor to the porsche 911 and the discontinued tesla roadster. The roadster will be back, but by then the i8 should have improved.

    Tesla S - looks cool -> i8 looks cooler
    model S is a daily driver sports sedan
    i8 is a carbon fiber sports car, that you can drive every day, but its not really great for cargo or passengers. Think more expensive and more rare. People stare at i8s like they do at the roadster. The model S is everywhere around here. I have had 3 different people in my car when we drove by an i9 and they all wanted to know what it was.

    i8 - fun on track days
    model S - only those idiots like Jeremy clarson do it, and it doesn't do well.

    BMW will try the 330e phev against the model 3. Hopefully they will sell in the hundreds of thousands between them.

    Oh, I've definitely had more issues with the Teslas.
    The reason for less time is because Tesla makes repairs & updates rather painless.
    Many times they would simply come pick up my car and leave me a loaner.
    Sometimes it would be an over the air fix.
    Other times I would bring the car to them, get another Model S as a loaner (usually a fully decked out one).

    True, no oil changes or such also helped.
    Even paperwork takes much less time.
    We had the voluntary recall issue inspected in 5 minutes (including paperwork).

    I've had a Leaf (in addition to my PIP) since June. It is a very nice car, and in almost every way about equal to the PIP, other than the obvious range limit and recharging time. Trunk space and config with seats down is lesser. But there are many things about it that are better than the PIP (fuel is free due to NCTC program, less maintenance, always quiet EV, better heat/defrost, better Nav, better dashboard display and feaures, heated steering wheel, etc.) Neither is in the same league as a Tesla. But then, with the money I saved by getting a Leaf instead of a Tesla I can go on a luxurious 2 week vacation every year for about 10 years.

    Isn't that primarily because
    * oil - which was over $100/barrel has sank into the toilet?
    * people - short memories
    * economy - giant bubble ready to do a repeat of 2007
    just a thought
    You don't really expect people do do the right/best thing, right?

    i guess that's how the tesla exec feels. if they got into it to save the world, that definitely puts them in the minority. toyota led, leaf and tesla followed, and everyone else is a wannabe.:cool:

    Toyota didn't get into it to save the world based on their vehicle line up.

    they built the first prius as the next century car. what should they have done, cancelled all the other models and gone out of business? you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make her drink.

    I think everyone gives toyota points for the prius.

    The disconnect is those that think toyota is an altruistic low ghg company. There fleet includes many cars that are just as thirsty as the competition, and these are better sellers than the prius. We have some on this forum that claim lack of plug-ins are because of too dirty grid, but they fail to acknowledge the thirsty toyota and lexus models.

    And there are others that refuse to acknowledge fleet without any reason, simply switching the topic to fuel-cell complaining instead.

    Leafs are everywhere in Calfornia, and by far I see more of them then Tesla. The price point of the Leaf over the Tesla makes it the obvious choice. Tesla is a nitch car just as Maserati is.

    Tesla has no status, no racing history, no pedigree. This is were Mercedes, BMW, Audi and even Lexus will be in the lead. It's hard to sell a vehicle, even as good as the Tesla may be, if it does not have history and a lifestyle.

    Is that not what I said? They are researching EV's. China is one of many research beds for Toyota.
