With the launch of a Tesla Roadster into outer space with Starman at the wheel, Tesla becomes the first automaker to put a production car into space. The Lil' Red Roadster is on its way to Mars, the Sun, and beyond. Match that BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Jaguar, and Toyota! These guys are so far behind it is laughable. They have no imagination or vision, they just try to copy and play catch up. They have no ability to show any leadership in the FUTURE of personal transportation.

Sure, today's event was 50% science and 50% show business, but we need some excitement injected into the malaise and endemic mediocrity we find ourselves today. Elon is a genius exceeded only by his chutzpah. We witnessed history today with iconic videos that will go down in infamy. The legacy automakers are not having a good day today.

    Now we know why:
Ever Wonder Why The Original Tesla Roadster Failed? Here's Why

For starters, the vehicle lacked the appropriate range. It was also rather rough around the edges. And clearly, the technology wasn’t ripe when it was released. There were some major PR dramas unfolding around it, as Jeremy Clarkson, the then co-host of Top Gear, bashed the Roadster in more ways than one could count. Even Musk admitted that the early Roadster “was completely unsafe,” it “broke down all the time,” and it “didn’t really work.” However, in the end, the Roadster was the first of its kind. It drove rather well – when it worked – and it was and still is a rather fun car overall.
