    Just saw this going on at a Nissan dealership;

    superChawd.jpg

I've seen prototype home made adapter jobbies much smaller, but never saw the Supercharger to Chademo adapter actually in use. Thinking these adapters must (in effect) increase Tesla's QC / recharge locations by an order of 5. So much for 275 mile range anxiety
    ;)

if you can afford the car, than it's a bargain at even 1/2 that price. My question now is; since Tesla has opened up their patents - that would mean the protocol for super charger technology is freely available. I'm looking forward to seeing the reverse adapter become available. There are a couple folk already working on it.

It would be interesting to see if Tesla would even allow non-Tesla vehicles with a reverse adapter to use their superchargers, since they do provide an element of exclusivity that is consistent with a luxury brand.

:)I have a BMW i3 BEV along with my 2012 Prius Plug In. I'd love to be able to charge at every type of DC Fast Chargers to include the Tesla Super Chargers. I'd hate to be a snob, but if I had a Tesla, I surely wouldn't want to wait in line for Super Charging, behind other non Tesla EVs.

I believe Musk would welcome it, once it was possible to charge those others a fee*. The point of releasing Tesla's patents was to encourage more companies to make BEVs. Allowing them access to an already, mostly, in place fast charging system would help in the cause. Besides, they could have easily prevented the charging patents from going public.

Tesla's long term goal is to also sell mainstream BEVs. So even they weren't going leave Superchargers in the realm of luxury exclusively.

*For the S60, Supercharger access is a $2000 charge at time of order, $2500 after that.

Musk has already stated he welcomes any other manufacturers into the supercharger network.
    He only has two requirements.

First, any company joining in must contribute to the buildout of the SC network.
    This will help avoid overcrowding.

Second, there will be no cost at the charger. Manufacturers could simply eat the cost, charge for SC access as an option, etc.
This keeps the process of charging, as well as upkeep very simple.

The CHAdeMO adapter is nice. I don't plan to get one myself, however I know of others that appreciate it.

    Yes, he is.
He has stated that it will be fleet wide and available as an over the air update.
Which pretty much means it isn't an infrastructure play.

It is always possible Tesla will announce that in addition to the subject of the tweets. I wouldn't put money on it though.

Would a chedemo to supercharger adapter need something to fool the supercharger into believing it connected to a Tesla charger? At best this would be a gray market item. There are probably some bright people working on this now.

Even though the Tesla page says it is coming soon, the OP photo looks like the Tesla adapter. It could be one out for a test, I guess.

Don't see how a third party one would a grey market item with the Tesla patents open,

Wouldn't work. The car and charger communicate. One of the things the charger checks is the VIN.
So any adapter would have to not only spoof a Tesla, but a specific VIN that is authorized.
I'm sure it is possible, but not worth the risk/trouble.

It takes 20 minutes or less to flash a different IMEI onto communication hardware, if you got the right tool. Just sayin '

That's like having a spare tire. You can charge at Nissan dealership, just in case.

Wait, does Model S come with a spare tire?

Tesla actually has some people that can actually think and plan ahead. I'm sure there are a lot of layers of protection against unauthorized use of Telsa SuperCharger stations including checking the location of the vehicle claiming to be VIN xxx versus the actual location of VIN xxx.

In NJ property records are public and accessible. Searching by address would bring up the owner from the deed, the assessed value, and probably the purchase price. Much better than visiting the County Clerk's office.

So spare doesn't come with it? You have to buy one and use up cargo space?

By the same virtue, I wouldn't want to be waiting in line at a CHAdeMO behind a Tesla, considering a Tesla would spend 90 minutes instead of 30 minutes using the QC. NRG eVgo will likely need to change their business model to a per kWh instead of per time, since Tesla would continuously draw at over 40 kW for over an hour without the quick taper down of the small battery EVs.
