I suppose the portion of 401k that's not in the Roth could make that 7,500 tax debt work for us.
Might have to seriously rethink this
    ;)

I did some financial gymnastics when we bought our PHEV in 2019 to create a Federal Tax deficit to take advantage of the EV/PHEV Tax Credit.

Never again will I do that.

Why in the name of common sense isn't this just applied to the vehicle price by the Dealer when the vehicle is purchased and then the Dealer is reimbursed by the Government..

In the case of a lease the manufacturer/Lessor gets the credit.

What happened to the dealer gives 7500 at time of sale next year? I don’t need to keep up on all this, not being in the market, ever. But I remember hearing something.

We never lease, but I do remember that being advertised as a commonsense way to access the incentive. Hyundai and KIA at the time were advertising doing what you suggested.

They will if they choose to participate, but you still have to qualify

I looked at leases all summer before purchasing, it didn’t seem like they were giving anything back

    Gee…

Am I the author of the Yahoo Finance news??

I haven't seen news about any other manufacturer losing the entire $7,500 on their main models, let alone any other news in that regard.

And I guess it is negativity to alert prospective Model 3 buyers on the sudden news about the tax credit entirely going away in a couple of weeks, ha?

Perhaps you two need to look up what psychological projection means.

No, not to the entire $7,500 anymore, I believe.

The Model 3 (except for the expensive performance trim) will lose the entire $7,500 credit.

The logistics of how that would work needed to be hammered out.
As of Jan 1st, that is exactly how it will work.

Just a total guess, but in the case of a tax rebate the basic mechanism is relatively easy to implement via the IRS and tax forms. In the case of the government sending large sums of money to dealerships every month or quarter they have to setup a way to do this and audit the validity of the claims. They don't call them stealerships for no reason.

My understanding is there is some sort of 'point of sale' option that discounts the purchase price when bought. You still file for the tax credit but for cash flow and car loan, instant savings.

If you only seek bad tesla news - then of COURSE you wouldn't see other's news - or even care about other manufacturers losing $7,500 tax credit

Nissan Leaf immediately came to mind .....
2024 Nissan LEAF eligible for $3,750 EV tax credit

    Here's a more comprehensive list

Only 10 Electric Car Models Will Qualify For Full Federal EV Tax Credit On January 1, 2024 - CleanTechnica

The new rules are about sourcing battery minerals in the USA as well as Manufacturing in USA as well as fair trade agreements. Next time, try to make your links be about being informative rather than making it about Tesla Tesla Tesla - the way Yahoo news does and other lazy journalists as well.

if you see a new bolt for sale after 12/31, you'd better snap it up and hope the dealer is participating in the federal program

    Huh?

    1. That's way old news. You want me collect news from last year as well??

    2. Unlike Tesla Model 3 that is suddenly losing the entire credit—which was not known until a couple of days ago and is news—Nissan is still good for half the credit, the latter of which was known and it is not really news.

As I said, I am sure prospective Model 3 buyers appreciate what I posted so that they can save $7,500.

Read the provided list again. SOME model 3's will lose the credit. Performance version still gets - as does the Y performance .another thing - Tesla can always re-source the batteries & if they do that, and that may very well be what they're planning to, it would be to their advantage to not mention it yet. Tesla has done well in most of it's effort at beating the gamesmanship of short sellers, other auto manufacturers, government entities Etc

The Model 3 rear-wheel drive and long-range rear-wheel drive models are by far the most sold and will lose the entire credit for now.
