I got mine at Best Buy this morning no problem. I showed up about 8:15 and there were 4-5 people buying but no lines and seemed like plenty of stock.

Thanks for the update. At work will look at it tonight after dinner. I can get $200 as a trade in of my Gen 3 or sell on craigslist for about $250. The question is do I want to part with $300

I am coming from an iPad 4, so performance-wise there is not a lot of difference (for the time being until apps begin to take advantage of the new power). I bought it solely because I wanted a lighter full-sized iPad.

I bought the iPad 1 originally and liked it, but found it was too slow to be as useful as I'd like. I waited until the iPad 4 was out to upgrade, and that was a revelation. It felt a lot more like using a real computer, and it has become my most-used computing device at home. It was just a little bit heavy for extended use in-hand. The Air appears to be about 70% of the way there. Not so light yet that I can manage it one-handed effortlessly, but a big improvement. With what Apple is doing with new apps like iPhoto for iOS I expect my iPad to only get more and more use in the future as 'real' computers become less and less necessary.

I ordered 64MB wifi this morning, no problem, from Apple store website, and was able to designate local pickup at an Apple store. They quickly confirmed it is ready for pickup. Once you designate on the initial screen what you want, you can check availability at local stores (by zip code). I took advantage of the Barclay credit card offer to delay payment for 12 months (interest free).

One rumor site said availability of some high end (128 mb cell) models was tightening at some stores.

As a side note, T-mobile's website is currently only showing 16mb and 32mb models.

This morning I was awake early (that often happens) so I did my exercising, showered, and waited until I figured rush hour would be over. I guess it was around 9:00 when I left home and around 9:30 when I got to the store. Didn't actually look at my watch. Regular opening at the store is 10:00 but for launch day it was 8:00. There were some customers, but I'd say three times as many "specialists" as customers. I walked in and got my iPad Air. 32 GB, wi-fi only, slate. Choosing the color was the second-hardest decision, since I don't care all that much.

Choosing between the case and the plain cover was harder. I tried to judge the weight, but both are very light. Then the sales guy said the cases only came in leather. I don't buy leather unless I really want something and there's no choice, or non-leather alternatives are inadequate, as for hiking boots. So that made the choice easy: I got the cover. No case.

Back home, loading it with my apps, music, and photos took a LONG time. I had a few issues, but it's all pretty much done. I have an appointment for their workshop on learning the iPad, since I never upgraded to iOS 7 on the Mini.

As soon as I turned it on at home, it knew my reminders. Wth??? Then I figured it out: At the store I had logged on and set it to my Apple account, and Reminders must sync to the iCloud, and it must have automatically synced with that.

Not sure if I should allow location services. Supposedly, "Find my iPad" can find a lost device, and even shut it down remotely. But the wi-fi-only version has no GPS (I think) so must rely on sniffing wi-fi networks to figure out a location. That seems pretty lame. And then Apple knows everywhere you go with the device. Of course, Verizon knows everywhere I go because of my phone, but for now I don't have Location Services turned on on the iPad.

There are a few things I have not figured out yet. I'll make a list for when I go to the workshop.

Glad to see you got one daniel.

Just really getting to use it a bit now. The screen looks just about the same as my 4. Perhaps a little whiter but I can't really say better. They're both awesome.

The narrower bezel makes the screen feel even bigger though, which is weird because the in hand feel is much better as well. The weight, thickness and width all add up to a device that's a lot easier to hold. Good stuff.

The funny thing is I was using my Microsoft Surface Pro at work a bit today, and for so many things the ipad is just faster and smoother even though the Surface has significantly more power. Neat device but I struggle to find ways to make full use of it.

I was surprised that the screen resolution does not seem all that much better than my Mini. The Mini has the same number of pixels as the iPad 2, but in a smaller area, giving it a resolution halfway between the 2 and the Air. The bigger difference will be in the larger type in web pages and in my Vox Spanish dictionary. I'm starting to read Spanish again, to refresh myself, and the dictionary is extremely handy. (Definitions in Spanish of Spanish words, a much better way to learn a language than a translating dictionary.) But the screen is not all that much larger, either, so it's a real but small improvement over the Mini. Of course it's faster with more memory, though I don't do much where speed matters.

I expect that the slightly larger screen will be a nice thing to have. I would not recommend the upgrade (Mini to Air) to someone who has to conserve pennies. But for me it should be good.

I just found a really useful app for my new iPad: Simple Transfer. There's a crippled free version, or $3 for the full version. It's for transferring photos and videos between the iPad (or any other iOS device) and a desktop computer.

I was frustrated at the process of getting photos to the iPad: First launch iPhoto on the computer and wait an interminable time for it to SLOOOOOOOWLY load all its pictures. Then drag the photos I want to transfer into it. Then plug the iPad into the computer and wait while it does a SLOOOOW and completely unnecessary backup. Then, finally, I could use iTunes to move the photos.

With Simple Transfer, I launch the app on the iPad and a browser on the computer. The app shows a URL that I then type into the browser (or bookmark it and use that). The browser shows a window that allows me to select photos from any folder on the computer to move to the iPad. The free version connects only to the Camera Roll album on the iPad, and allows transfers only one picture at a time, but the full version will connect to any album and allows batch transfers. Pics can also be moved from the iPad to any folder on the computer.

I know there are other ways to move photos, using the cloud, but this does not involve sending them to some cloud server where they may be stored even if I delete them; who knows what those cloud admins do with the stuff that passes through? This is more private, and much faster. It uses your home wi-fi network, so both the iPad and the computer have to be connected to the same router, and if you are streaming or downloading heavily through your router at the same time as you transfer photos it will slow down the transfer, but otherwise it's very fast.

Just to follow up, the T-mobile website is finally showing all 4 memory options for their cellular ipads (16 mb, 32 mb, 64 mb & 128 mb). In a new wrinkle, customers who want to finance their iPad through T-Mobile and who don’t already have T-Mobile service are required to sign up for a paid plan, starting at $20 for 500 mb (plus another 200 mb "free"). If you pay cash, you get the 200 mb free without a paid plan. As I understand it, if you are a voice customer, you get a $10 monthly credit on any paid plan. I'm pretty sure tethering is included in their simple choice voice/data plans.

They lost a sale with me by not having all their ducks in a row last Friday.

I finally got around to doing a side-by-side comparison of image quality between the iPad Air and my old iPad Mini. The Air is definitely sharper and clearer, though not by an enormous amount. Noticeable, but would not have been worth the upgrade had I not wanted the larger screen for easier reading of small fonts. Given that I did want that, and I could afford it, the improvement in screen sharpness is a nice benefit.

Downloading of big files seems to be very fast. But I have not attempted to quantify that or do a direct comparison. The Air is supposed to have faster wi-fi. I'm happy with the downloading speed.

Here's a question I posted on the Apple Communities forum and have not gotten a reply. Normally, if there is an answer they have it pretty quick. That's where I learned about Simple Transfer, mentioned earlier.

Every time I plug the iPad or the iPod Touch into the computer, iTunes does a backup. Usually that backup is completely unnecessary. Is there any way to tell iTunes to refrain from doing the backup unless I request it? Time Machine on the Mac lets me specify how often to do a backup, and even lets me choose to initiate backups manually. Is there anything similar for the iOS devices?

Short answer - Yes, there are backup settings on the summary tab/screen in itunes (when the device is plugged in) that control whether to open itunes automatically when the device is plugged in, whether to sync, whether to back up to icloud or to your computer, and whether to only backup manually.

Long answer - There's really no need to plug into your computer anymore. You can buy apps directly from your ipad, and all apps on your ipad can be set to update automatically over wifi. The operating system can also be updated over wifi. If you set up an icloud account (not to be confused with your itunes account), you can backup to, and restore from, icloud. You can also choose to occasionally manually backup to your computer, just for a bit of redundancy, and because restores are said to be faster that way (in case someone doesn't know, you can do a restore to a new ipad from a backup of an old ipad).

I use iTunes to automatically download podcasts, and I plug in the iPod to manage them: Delete the ones I've listened to and put the new ones on it. I did discover that I can stop the backup by clicking on the x in the progress bar. But as far as telling it to backup manually only, what I see are choices whether to use the cloud or the computer to back up, and whether to encrypt the backup. I can also tell it to back up now, or to restore. But I see no selection to NOT backup automatically. (I can tell it to manage music and photos manually, which is fortunate, or it would be a real pain.)

And while there may be apps to access individual podcasts, the only way I know to manage all my podcasts together is via iTunes, and since I have to use the computer for that, it's easier to plug the iPod into it.

The iPad gets plugged in less often, now that I have an app to get pictures to it over wifi. Of course, I want to back it up occasionally.

I read about the Target trade-in program in the paper last Thursday, so I moved my iPad upgrade up about a month. I traded in my late wife's original iPad (16GB, wifi) at the Target near work last Friday. They had no wait, but didn't have any iPad Airs in stock. I asked if I could also trade in my own original iPad and they said "Sure, at another store." I went home, did a full sync to my iMac, and took my original iPad (32GB, 3G) to my local Target. Again, there was no line, but also no iPad Airs. BTW, the regular Target trade-in values for my iPads were about $65 & $75, so $200 each was awesome.

Armed with $400 in Target gift cards, I started calling area Target stores on Saturday morning which target.com claimed had an iPad Air, 64GB, wifi in stock. One store had a returned unit, hmmm, and another had one in stock that they would hold if I came right away. So, for $299 plus tax (on $699), I bought the upgraded iPad Air I wanted. While I was buying the unit, the sales clerk was on the phone telling another customer that he would hold their only 32GB Air if they came right away.

It took a couple hours Saturday evening to let the new iPad get restored from my iMac, install the rest of the software over the net, and then update all the old apps because my old iPad couldn't run IOS 6 or 7.

On Sunday after church, I made a run to the Apple store to pick up a Apple case (it was funny how the Air flopped around in my Saddleback Leather iPad 1 case) and spare lightning power cord for work (thank you Apple for having yet another connector).

I also took advantage of the Target offer to exchange my wife's iPad2 to an iPad Air. The improved screen is a treat for old eyes. Oddly enough my wife did not think the Air's screen was better than a non-retina screen when we checked them out at the Apple store; in fact, she preferred the low rez! We both thought she was paying attention to the higher brightness level in the old device rather than the clarity. At home we do not have the bright lights of a store, and then she saw the marked improvement.

I hate to say it since I just bought a MacBook Air, but when Apple upgrades the notebook to Retina I'm buying.

Yup, we had been keeping an iPad1 for the kids, but the Target offer was too good to pass up. Probably keeping the iPad4 instead now unless I get someone willing to pay a good price from Craigslist. If that happens, we'll add a new Mini to the stable.
