The Plugin has belt-driven accessories?

    I heard that on a Youtube video and was surprised. I thought the Plugin was based on the g3 platform, which has no belts.

    i think there is a belt, not sure. and if there is, not sure what it drives. water pump maybe?

    The youtube video claimed the heater is belt driven, therefore the engine has to turn-on to produce heat for the passengers. (shrug). The non-plug G3 has an electric heater doesn't it? And electric water pump, a/c, etc.

    the heater is conventional in g3 plug in and otherwise. radiator and fan. the ice has to run to produce heat. a/c and power steering are electric.

    Ahhh so no electric heater in any of the Priuses. That's different from the Volt Plugin which uses an electric heater (I think?)

    i think so, at least pre heat while plugged in.

    The PIP has an electric heating element located above the traditional heater core.
    It is listed here in the Prius parts catalog as the "Quick Heater, item #9.
    Its not very powerful but in my area it is usually sufficient provided I don't set the heater output temp higher than 68 degrees. Going above that setting almost heater.gif
    always starts the ICE on my car.

    The test mule fleet had heat pumps (and a larger traction pack) . . . . I'd love to pick one of those puppies up . . . for a song of course.

    Toyota calls the small electric heaters in Gen 2 Prius PTC Heaters. I would guess that is the buzzword for Gen 3 as well.

    Maybe that is why it takes forever to get warm in the PIP vs my 05 Prius?

    i find them both to be the same in our climate. of course, the ice came on right away in the gen II, so heat from electric heater would be hard to identify. but with the ice cold in either vehicle, i have never felt anything resembling heat.
