    Yes the tools.

Ironically this link is about a fella who uses tools. He never knows when somebody might "mouth off" to him and require him to take out his Glock.

    Desparate, tragic, epic weakness.

I'm reminded of a story I saw in 'Guns and Ammo' magazine - published around 1975. It stated that 90% of US cops who are shot in the line of duty, are in fact shot with their own weapon!!! (It was a story about a small automatic weapon that was considered a good back-up for the cop, if his main gun was taken from him and about to be used on him!!)

In 1975 they probably were.... for a couple of reasons that would get this thread thrown into the dumpster faster than wearing a MAGA hat would get a dirty look at a Frisco coffee shop.

One of the less politically entangling reasons however was weapons safety.....which in the mid 70's was located between the ear lobes of the owner.
Many LEOs back then still packed revolvers.
Police department issued weapons TODAY (unlike military weapons) lean away from thumb or slide safeties but they still have a lot more safety features like de-cocking levers, magazine disconnects, Gucci triggers, etc than the old desk Sargent's Colt Detectives and Smitties.
Training is WAAAAAAAY different as well.

In other words......more LEOs back then probably shot themselves with their own weapon!.....in addition to the sticky socioeconomic reasons that shootings were different back in the day.
Although many were accidents, some certainly were not.
Remember.....back then PTSD was little understood, and mental health were words not often used in the same breath.
1970s mental health was usually attempted by using two words that are less often associated with each other now than they were back then:
    Cop Bar.

Also......The Nam had just spooled down.
    See:
Crazy Nam Vet......or PTSD, circa 1976.

    Lotsa moving parts there.

Just a slight correction, because I'm old too. The original Dodge Challenger had a twin in the Plymouth Barracuda (later shortened to just 'Cuda). The Dodge Charger's twin was the Plymouth Road Runner. But you are absolutely correct about the original Dodge Demon being the twin of the Plymouth Duster.
