I never said they were ending production of cars, what I said was this:

    I'll stand by that statement.

"Just" selling them in the US....is IMO pretty big. That isn't a "just" statement.
For two of the USA's largest automotive manufacturers both pioneers in mass production and automobile design and sales to decide to basically drastically reduce selling automobiles in their own back-yard is IMO huge.

it's either a lifesaver or the death knell. we likely won't know for a few more years, or as long as low gas holds out

The local Toyota dealer has been a car free environment for a few years, what’s worse is Toyota dealers don’t really “order” a car for you either.

So I guess it’s already happened in many areas

Depends on how profitable the Cali market is, might just see more compliance cars and credit sales.

Also SUVs/Trucks don’t have to meet the same requirements so a truck only company doesn’t have to achieve the same credit levels as a “car” maker in the state

The one thing I’ve learned out here is that once you find a loophole, they will work hard to close it.

So if that is true, it won’t be that way for long.

Americans have decided to not buy cars, more precisely sedans. The car models that are being cancelled were on the lots when people chose to buy Escapes, Equinoxes, Rav4s, CR-Vs, etc.

China is going to surpass North America for largest car market in the near future, then India will follow. Cars still sell there.

GM is getting there house in order for the future. They got out Europe already. Then we are just assuming that they are actually cancelling the models that are made at these plants. The factories are being shuttered because they aren't running at capacity. Production for these models can be moved elsewhere. The factory making the Cruze hatchback isn't closing, sedan production can move there. It is possible the Volt will become a Chinese import, not likely, but GM isn't beholden to us to disclose all there plans.

The big selling large pick ups aren't efficient enough to meet CAFE. They still need efficient cars or plug ins to meet that.

OK, i went to truedelta.com and compared volt/prius failure rates and the results are not pretty for the 2nd gen volt. looks like the 1st gen volt was better. then i clicked on the typical problems reported (severe, usually at low miles). I also googled for volt battery failures and found a number of reports with major failures (including an explosion due to internal short), covered by warranty of course, but often with very long repairs. Also a few trannies replaced at low miles. and decided this is not the car for me. At least I considered it.

I'm thinking there is more to that volt fiasco than the low oil prices.

is it sedans? Some are doing great ..... Camery, Model 3, & others come to mind. What is it that they've got that the others don't.
