There has got to be a way to get the navigation update without giving my first unborn to Toyota

Toyota is quoting me 269 dollars for the navigation update USB drive, and they refuse to let me install it myself, and they charge an additional 140 dollars for the install. There has to be a way to download it online, hack it, buy it used, something. Anyone? It's a freaking robbery.

I don't know why automakers don't seem to catch on.
I have a OLD Garmin with free lifetime maps updates.

It works great, and after 5 years plus, I can buy a new one for less than Toyota charges for a single time map update.
I almost wish mine would break so I could justify getting a new one,- they've improved.

But NOT wanting the Navigation package was a big reason I went ahead with a Prius Two.

I would think the few (very few) times you would encounter a road that's not on the navigation, you could use your smart phone / computer to look it up. Hardly an issue at all.

I have a Garmin from 10 years ago and it finds 99.999999999% of all the roads I go to.

Just editorial: I think it's first born, not first unborn. C'mon, Toyota's not that bad.

Here's the thing, the guy wants his Nav system (that he paid extra for) up to date without paying an arm and a leg. That is an outrageous price. Sorry that that is the case but, not surprising. Have you tried eBay?

I wonder if that could be a warranty claim if within the 3/36k? As it's not working properly without an available update to the system (it can't find a certain address)

I have seen them on ebay but you may or may not get one that works and it may not be the latest

I just checked there on eBay and they are not for the USB equipped system.

I had the dealer update the maps in my 2013 Prius v. Cost about $200 with $50 coupon. It was a waste of money. The maps they installed were about 2 years out of date compared to the maps in my Garmin that were updated the same week for free. I understand your desire to use the expensive Toyota GPS and not have a $100 GPS hanging on you windshield but the Garmin is far superior. There is no way around this.

I have a second 7 year old Garmin GPS (did not have lifetime maps) that I updated with free maps from openstreetmaps.org. Even that works better than the Toyota GPS.

Many like the idea of having their car speakers give them turn by turn instructions, you can do that using your smart phone maps and the bluetooth connection to your car audio. That's pretty much free and always updated

    True.
But given the prices Toyota charge to keep it up to date, along with reports of "questionable" performance?
Even IF I owned Toyota's navigation system, I think considering buying a Garmin or portable system a good and viable choice.

Otherwise the only answer is Pay The Piper, or search for a bargain.

Today only Best Buy has the Garmin 3597LMTHD on sale from $330 down to $270. I ordered one with free shipping. The NAV in the Toyota seems mediocre at best. I just have to figure out where I can put it to not block the poorly placed instrument panel that should be directly in front of the driver and not in the center of the car.

I know that doesn't answer how to get the Toyota update inexpensively but thought some people might be interested.

Thank you all for your suggestions. But unless I'm wrong, here is the main reason why I prefer the Toyota navigation : reliability.
I think it has to do with the fact that the GPS is connected to the antenna on the outside of the car, but for example, when going in the midst of downtown Houston, when most signals are bad and blocked by a bunch of buildings, most GPS systems constantly lose connection (including my phone), but the built in GPS in the car does not. Also, the GPS was remarkably reliable driving from Houston all the way to the middle of Mexico, something my smartphone couldn't do without relying on roaming and all related fees. I don't know who is the company behind the map system, but I find it unique and useful how the upcoming intersecting freeways and Freeway exits pop up at the top in big Green sings resembling those you see in the actual road, and highlights not only which to take, but which lanes to stay in. I have always been very impressed with that. I owned a Tom Tom long ago, but it was a pain to use. Google maps has the most up to date maps but is halfway reliable at best, constantly rerouting and often confused. Is possible they are much better now, but if I'm gonna invest money in something that is gonna be an in dash android auto unit.
