Uh....no. I wasn't going to say anything of the sort. It was merely a comment on how 'rude' religious and political discussions can be.

To be fair, the Fabia comes with a variety of engines, from 1.2 liter to 1.9 liter, so you need to be careful what was tested when looking at acceleration and fuel economy. He has the 1.4 liter diesel version, but I'm not sure which year.

Twittel, it's evening/night in Scotland now, we'll see in the morning if our Scottish friend is ready with fresh insults for us.

When I was in college, oh those many years ago, 13B Sunset Heights, Home of the "Bozo Boys" and "Arrow Carpet Service" there were a couple of Road Signs, that were liberated from the wilds of the Illinois road system, that always made an impression with the visitors to 13B, that I will pass on to all of you...

Yeah, I'm a little confused so I'll probably get yelled at for trying to understand Scotland Tim.
The official Skoda website shows a Fabia Combi, which is only 9" shorter than the Prius, the standard Fabia (which is still a 4-door liftback) is 19" shorter. The 1.4l diesel engine is no longer being offered on the Fabia, so he must have an older car, which probably has slightly different dimensions.

In any case, it's a smaller car with apparently slower acceleration to 60 mph (100 kmh) and almost certainly higher emissions per mile (CO2 excluded). His 60 mpg uses imperial gallons (1.2 U.S. gallons), so that comes to 50 mpg in our system. That is feasible for a compact diesel, which really hasn't been offered much in the U.S. I remember a diesel Ford Escort that we had back in the 80's, it got better mileage than any gas car available. Diesel has something like 15% more energy per gallon than gasoline, so that accounts for part of it, but the diesel engine is more efficient. Diesel was very difficult to use in northern MN winters, basically you could only turn it off in the garage if you wanted to be able to restart it on those single digit or below days (-15'C).

A modern clean-diesel hybrid would be the best option for mileage, assuming the other problems can be solved, but it would be more expensive than the gasoline hybrid.

Here in the U.S. we are so used to the idea that the Prius is far ahead of any other car in terms of fuel efficiency that we forget other options exist in the rest of the world. But the other options still have compromises (smaller engine, smaller, lighter vehicle). The fit and finish can be just as good or better, since they design smaller cars as the primary car for a household; whereas for us it's thought of as a secondary car for commuting or college, etc. and they generally don't get that attention from the manufacturer.

That's strange. I wonder if you're the only one having problems with my pictures. :( This one was a funny one too.

    The 1.4 liter Fabia gets:
    58.90 mpg (imp, I assume)

    ...while the Prius gets:
    65.70 mpg

Again, objective testing doesn't jive with his claims that the Fabia is more efficient. All the PriusChatters conceding his point that the Fabia is more efficient are taking too much for granted.

I'd claim he's probably driving the Prius wrong or at least in a sub-optimal situation if the OP's claims are true.

Actually, I think "Fabio"... that guy with the long hair and bare chest on all those romance novel covers...

... you know, the one that makes you think, "sure, pretty boy. Nothing below the belt, however..."

That's odd. I can see it at home on my Mac with Safari, but can't see it at work with XP and Firefox. (The work firewall isn't blocking it either).
