Considering that some degree of this always happens, and that social media is highly subject to overhyping a few isolated incidents and disseminating huge loads of wishful thinking and propaganda, I'm not yet getting my hopes up for widespread Russian setbacks. There isn't enough independent confirmation. Overall, the Russians are still progressing, even if slower than earlier expected.

Though it is very encouraging to see an apparently strong level of Ukrainian resistance. I'm still crossing my fingers that Putin will receive a hard lesson about why Bush The Elder did not go into Baghdad.

putin cares not for the lives of his soldiers, nor the general population, for that matter.

The U.S. has had this planned out for at minimum 10 years already.

    Concur!
    However (comma!)
Remember that the only thing more dangerous than Russians invading Ukraine 'might' be Russians that feel that they are backed into a corner...

Right now Putties largest threat is an angry population whose median household income is 1/4 of that enjoyed in the US state of Mississippi.

As long as the US keeps gyrating from one hyper-partisan administration to the other I'm thinking that they cannot even plan a dinner menu....OR a daily itinerary

they were interviewing a guy in moscow yesterday. they asked him if he thought putin was serious about nukes.
he said, 'nothing would surprise me, he's crazy'.

It's not a show it's horrific and inhumane and never needs to happen again if humans are going to still have humanity in them in the future.

And there's far more players than just the US. End of WWII politics and fall of USSR combined with economic opportunities that Ukraine positioned themselves perfectly for has much more influence than US will ever have in the region.

O that it would be so……
I’m old enough to remember people clutching pearls the last time a loud-mouth with a twitter account said some things that were twisted around as an insult to NATO.
Im also old enough to remember being called an isolationist for applauding a decision to reduce out footprint in Syria.

You cannot have it both ways.
We’re either an exceptional nation or we are not.

If not then we need to bring HOME about 200,000 kids, stop building ships with grey hulls, start trading oil in Yuan instead of bucks, and sit on the porch and criticize nations that ARE exceptional.

It’s sorta like “defund the police” on a global scale…… ;)

I think of NATO as more a what than a who, and 'insult' can be a big deal to some whos, but more or less roll off of most whats.

Whats can be undermined though, which might have been what some of that excitement was about.

Whenever I read "X's words were twisted around as Y", I'm open to being shown a plausible way that X's words could have been taken as not-Y. Sometimes there is one, and in those cases, the claim that the words were "twisted" may hold up.

As much as I dislike what I'm currently reading in the news, I can still fairly vividly picture an alternative where standing up to the aggressor would be left to other NATO members and the EU while one exceptional NATO member would have "very savvy" and "genius move" coming from an official Twitter account instead of a private one.

Maybe it wouldn't make much difference ultimately. It's hard to make predictions, especially about paths not taken.

Don't even nations we decline to call exceptional still build grey ships, and deploy kids, in support of (what they calculate to be) their interests?

That seems like one of the less exceptional bits about being a nation.

I think a country is exceptional when it rises to the occasion and cooperates for the better of society and the world

Great leaders can help and motivate countries to be exceptional .

    Some examples might be:
    Winston Churchill
    George Washington
    Abraham Lincoln
    Dwight Eisenhower
    Both Roosevelts and Eleanor Roosevelt
    Ghandi

These were leaders who helped their Countries be the best they could be and bought out the best in people while helping people be the best they could be.

Sure they were imperfect but they were a positive influence on entire countries.

When we look around now for someone of exceptional character and leadership we may not be so lucky.

Pends on how you look at it.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.
It's an inside-out thing FIRST....going all the way back to the 1780's.

We saw that in Iraq and are witnessing it in Ukraine NOW, even as I type this.

Specific examples of failures to MEET the challenges that face ALL nations and separate the exceptional ones from the ones that just "suck less" would cause some pucker-butt to have this thread flushed into the PC sewer.....so we'll have to leave it at that. ;)

I can still fairly vividly picture an alternative where standing up to the aggressor would have been a function of thirty NATO nations pulling on the oars together after some behind-the-scenes leadership........

    .....But hey.
    Paths not taken.

At the risk perhaps of actually staying on topic......

I thought The Onion was for satire.

If we ever have another dynasty in the Oval Office, I hope the younger generation is willing to ask the older for advice, not ignore them and run headlong into the traps the elder was wiser enough to avoid. Also to not take primary direction from someone suffering even one dose of heart-lung machine brain fog, let alone four doses.

    Lol @PriusCamper

Then because they have been planning this for 10 years they gently back out of there and let Russia take it.

There's so many different reasons why the future of the world is balanced on the tip of Ukraine right now... But fossil fools industry thinking they rule the world is as always #1.
