I am betting many officers will stop you to admire your windows and give you a ticket.

In CA the front side need to pass 70% of the light and my stock windows were already at 78%. Only the top 4 inches of the windshield can have any tint.

Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window Any darkness can be used.

    What Jimbo said.

I think it looks great, and the cops will say thank you....with fines. I have the same dark grey Gen 4 and wanted to go darker, but not enough to get pulled over for no other reason.

Maybe because it's on a dark car, they look darker than what would be legal here. Your installer should know what is legal, it'd be worth asking them.

Here, installers that I've spoken to won't install darker than legal, as they could be liable.

Many years ago, my ageing father-in-law installed darker than what today would be legal, and found that he had difficulty driving at night with his ageing eyes - and I agreed, though I was MUCH younger. I think he had the 2 front windows re-tinted lighter.

In the US (Minnesota) the installers will put in darker than legal, but they make you sign a liability waiver.

....but hey, it's a very cool looking Prius! Just throw the tickets in the glove box and don't pay them, like 99% of all other California drivers. :ROFLMAO:

I actually wanted to get my windows redone, to a little darker. The sun and the heat are pretty brutal.
I checked at two or three window tint shops, and they want $200-$250 to remove the old tint!
(and no, I'm not going to attempt to doing it myself.)

I think you'll pass. If not, all you got to do is lighten up the front side windows bit. I think the angle of the picture makes it look a little darker than it is.

Interesting. What I was told here - getting a customer to sign a liability waiver is tantamount to them admitting that they're installing something they know is illegal. Obviously the law (which I'm told is an nice person) is interpreted differently in different parts of the world - and probably according to how much you can pay your barrister.

I've always gone for legal. Surprisingly, the difference in UV and heat transfer was very little between "legal" and "not legal". [The installer had some so dark you could barely see through, but said they were for commercial vans etc where there is no regulation.] Yes, there's a percentage difference, but for every percentage "improvement", there is less and less benefit. Possibly an exponential function, but my maths is a bit out of date - like 45 years.

Our 2016 Prius v Three came with tinted windows. It was a nice addition to the car particularly the front seat window tint.

It all depends on where you drive. Oklahoma legal front side window tint would get you ticketed driving in California. California legal rear side and back window tint could get you ticketed in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Window Tint Law Enacted in 2005

Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.

Front Side Windows Must allow more than 25% of light in.

Back Side Windows Must allow more than 25% of light in.

Rear Window Must allow more than 25% of light in.

I have always had dark tint here in Florida and never have gotten a ticket.

I've got out of many tickets after pulling out my military ID, like a get out of jail card, hopefully it works for this situation if I get pulled over for the windows

It's really not that dark. The angle of the sun, time of day, and the camera can play tricks. My Prius tint is only 34%? When I had my Camry (with darker tint) I had to roll down a window at night so that I could see an address or street name... or pedestrians. Not good.

I've got enough problems with not-so-hot night vision, myopia. Then there's the split hatch window, high beltline, forest of head rests (I tip down the rears now, helps a bit). I need all the light I can get.

Plus, I'm not a fan of aftermarket plastic film applied to glass. If I was shopping used, and the car had tint, that would be a deal breaker.

Yeah, I know: dog in the manger, lol.

    I completely understand.

My vision is not what it used to be. These "young punks" will discover that, one day. Fortunately, I don't have to drive at night if I don't want to. And even with my light tint, it is still a little difficult to see out the side windows if I'm driving through a dark area. I don't know how those guys with "limo black" do it.
