Yeah, I have to carry chain in the truck at all times between November and May. Also, snow tires have to have at least 6/32" or half of their tread when new and the CHP officers that work that area know when/if you're trying to BS them. I have seen CHP Explorers that are 4WD and with studded snow tires have to chain up once when it got bad

I remember in the 90's when I was stationed in Sacramento and used to take weekend trips to Lake Tahoe/Reno during the winter months, that it was enforced on I-80.
