Per the owner's manual, the Prius tires are supposed to be rotated front to back, same side; but for my 2015 Avalon the manual says to rotate in the cross pattern. Anyone know why these two Toyotas should have differing rotation pattern recommendations?

we don't know why, but most here believe the cross pattern is the best way, unless the tyres are directional. a lot of times, the owners manuals are simply not updated thoroughly.

Hey Bisco, if you are from Boston how come you spell tires "tyres"?

Prior to radial tires (or tyres) most manufacturers used cross rotation, but early radials disliked changing the direction of rotation so it was recommended to stay on one side of the car. About the time manufacturers got so good at making radials that they could go back to cross rotating, directional tread patterns once again forced staying on the same side of the car.

Toyota favors second sourcing tires, many models have 3 possible OEM tires in each size, and many models have two sizes of tire. If any of these 6 tire models is directional, the manual will favor front to back rotation. If no OEM tire for a car is directional, the manual will favor cross rotation.

Directional tires tend to be performance tires (for many definitions of the word performance) while comfortable tires tend to be omnidirectional.
