When I got in the temps were around -18 F. Has since warmed up to +8 F, but strong S winds and blowing snow

My Aunt and Dad informed me that on Tuesday, it was -40 F, with windchills -60. They saved the paper just to prove it to me

I posted a link to your photo and some folks in another forum I frequent are telling me this is an OLD PIC and not one from the current cold spell...

Is that the truth... or is your pic current there in ChiTown land Bra...

When I lived in North Dakota, I tolerated the bitterly cold winters because they insured a very low population density. But in Chicago, you don't even get that benefit from the cold. What possible reason could there be for living there?

(Spokane seems to get a month of pretty nasty weather, typically in December, or mid-December to mid-January. Then it's pretty nice, as the northern U.S. goes. I managed for once to be gone for the worst of it this year. Knock on wood. *Raps knuckles on head.*)

This is actually not in America. The truth about the pic (from another forum I frequent)
Léman Lake Switzerland Ice Storm Photographs

Facts are important, fauxs aren't... you should let folks know it's bogus when you're bullin em with dazzle Bra.

True dat. It's easy to find *zero* population density less than half an hour drive out side of Winnipeg. For those who appreciate peace and quiet, it's great

There's also something exciting about a climate that can kill the unprotected person in under half an hour

Of *course* I keep my booze in the same building! Can you picture me staggering out of the house, in a blinding blizzard, to fetch a bottle of gin from the workshop?

Ok, maybe you can. Never mind ....

I wouldn't trust any rope I personally had to tie a knot in. I'm pretty sure I was the absolute worst Boy Scout in history, at least when it came to tying knots

Yep, I can imagine it now, the knot comes undone, and I go staggering off into the blizzard to meet my fate, while Tom is sitting in my house and chuckling

I went to school for a while in Erie, PA with the 'lake effect' wind chill and walking on paths from class to class with snow drifts on each side so high one couldn't see over them. I'm happy now to winter on the CA coast as my life winds down. I remember ice boating and going so fast I could hardly see. I recall ice fishing waaay out on the lake hearing the searing cracks as the temp dropped. You could hear the cracks thundering for miles before they roared past. Eerie Erie.

Way back when I had a contract with Honeywell, spent a week at the mill in Erie. I can't recall now if it was a Potlatch or a Hammermill facility. It was January, and between the lake effect snow and the wind, quite exciting being on top of those tall tanks

Yea, terrible weather. We would be lucky to have weather like that in August.

Our boat has a diesel fired hot water heating system that will put out 43,500 btu/hr, which should give you some idea of our boating weather.
