Consumer's Union rated the car a best buy, a rating which considered the high resale value, not just yearly operating costs. Total cost of ownership is lower for the Prius than most other cars.

I drive 20K per year, and gas hasn't been below $2.50 in months. My payback, ignoring the resale value numbers, is 5-7 years. After that it's all profit.

In the meantime, it's all fun!!

I got 62.5% resale value on my Corolla when I traded it in, which made it possible to buy the Prius. Granted, you may not get 100% on a Prius a few years from now but if gas prices are around $3 or $4 by then, I'm betting that I'll get better than 62.5 for the Prius. That's presuming that I ever WANT to sell it.
