    1. Try not to confuse peak efficiency with average efficiency
    2. Provide a link of a current, on the road VW car that matches your claim.
    3. Look at this SFC graph from wikipedia for a representative modern passenger diesel:

See that tiny island used for dart games labeled "206" ? That is 40.6% efficiency.

On spritmonitor.de auris and prius are almost on par and yaris is lower (which means better mileage using lt%100km).
Also here there are many complaining to get low mpgs with a prius, many users subscribe to a forum just when they have a problem and write to seek help, the ones getting good mileage doesn't subscribe just to write "everything is ok here".
Also on absolute numbers there are more complaining about auris and yaris mileage in uk because now they are selling more than the prius.

Volkswagen Lupo TDI was officially rated 88mpg. Not even the tiny 1.0 insight engine could touch it, because High-compression engines are more efficient at completely-combusting the fuel. It's basic

Current cars using the same 1.2 L engine are the Polo, Ibiza Ecomotive, Škoda Fabia and Up!

    1. Imperial gallon.
    2. Diesel Fuel (13% higher fuel content)
    3. Euro cycle value, not EPA

    88 MPG(i) = 88/1.2 MPG(us) = 73.3 MPG(us)
    Petrol equivalent: 73.3/1.13 = 64.86 MPG(us)
Conversion to EPA: uncertain, but the Insight 1.0 already has it beat.
