So, a three wheel Twizzy. Or electric Elio, though the Elio can do highway speeds.

Scooter.:) It doesn't reach 40mph, and I don't think the NEV distinguishes between 4 and 3 wheels.

It's Toyota's answer to the Zap! Xebra. At least they are competing with someone on BEVs.

At the federal level, "scooter" refers to a kickscooter, and electrified versions thereof, and it's a Consumer Product Safety Commission term, CPSC's jurisdiction being either design speeds of 20 mph or less, or off-road use only.

(Also, at the federal level, "neighborhood electric vehicle" isn't a class - it's "Low Speed Vehicle", and that class is for four-wheeled vehicles with design speeds above 20 but below 25 mph.)

For one to three-wheeled vehicles with design speeds over 20 mph, at the federal level, there's two classes - "motorcycle" and "motor-driven cycle", the latter being the former but with 5 bhp or less.

Now, some states use "scooter" to refer to a sub-class of what the feds call a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle, and use "neighborhood electric vehicle" to refer to electric Low Speed Vehicles.

In any case, the i-Road has a 45-60 km/h top speed depending on market (45 for Europe, 60 for Japan), and 4 kW of power. This means that it's a motorcycle per federal regulations. (The 4 kW power limit and 45 km/h European-market top speed are to slot into the three-wheel moped class in Europe, presumably.) In some states, with a top speed at 30 mph or under, it may count as a moped/motorized bicycle and be exempt from registration, but that's very much a state-by-state thing.

I know that yamaha's electric scooter, the ec-03 is being used by toyota.

maybe this strange beast is toyota's take on the the yamaha design. First you neuter it by adding a second front wheel. Then you cover it (probably makes it get more km/kwh because of aerodynamics).

Perfect punishment for the 'loud pipe' cyclists . . . 30 days in the EV.
