toyota sucks at advertising

    I just drove past a Hyundai dealership and they strategically parked a few Ioniq hybrid cars with huge stickers 58MPG. It cost them next to nothing to do that, yet impact is huge.

    Contrast with Toyota's way of advertising Prius. Weird or bizzare and expensive TV adds appealing to artsy types and LGBT-friendly, but totally miss the general population and don't convey the MPG.

    Even the styling of Ioniq is much better than the new bizzare Prius. It looks a bit as Scion tC.

    They are doing a great job advertising Kia Niro, too. They drove it across USA and got Guinness record for low MPG. I'm sure Prius could beat it when hypermilled, but it was not done.

    Now, Toyota is behind Huyndai losing its own game.

    Kia and Hyundai are hungrier than Toyota.
    Humans aren't really good with history, so they don't remember a time......not all that long ago, when Japanese cars were doing the same thing.

    As far as styling?
    Styling will never make me "have to" buy a car......but it WILL keep me from buying one.

    .....Just sayin. :D

    no argument for me. toyota has had the same bad advertising agency for as long as i've been buying them. and the dealers put prius out back, and land barges out front.

    Yes! Thanks for pointing it out. I guess I was thinking about low fuel consumption while typing. I do those slips a lot. The more I think about it, the more I'm attracted to that Ioniq hybrid. The Huyndai's simple advertising tactics are working surprisingly well.

    I'd be ok with that. With the 4th gens our local dealership doesn't stock Prius, out front or around the back. According to a service writer, they're all special order, spoken for when they come in.

    That got the Echo hatchback.
    We had to wait for Toyota to launch a whole new brand to get that in the US.

    I don't claim to know what good advertising is but might I point out, we all drive Toyotas. So they're doing something right. If you drive a Prius despite the poor advertising, then I'd argue Toyota invested the money in the right place.

    I only bought Toyota's (4 of them) for their edge in fuel efficiency vs comparable cars from competition. 2 of them turned out to have only average reliability, 2 other (including Prius) are very reliable. Incidentally, I never saw MPG values advertised by Toyota, I had to find them from EPA.
    If Toyota loses it's edge in fuel efficiency, I'm gone. I'm still undecided on EV cars or plug in hybrids.

    we bought out first toyota based on reputation. (talk amongst friends and relatives. a camry, it proved itself worthy.
    when i heard about the gen 1 prius, i desperately wanted one for the cool technology. but they couldn't be had in these parts. when gen 2 came out, i got in line and paid msrp. that being said, their advertising is still abominable. you can say that they put their money in the right place, but that would infer no advertising, not bad advertising. they probably advertise more than any other manufacturer.
    maybe it's cheap, low cost advertising?

    agreed, but i would lump all dealers in the same pot. and turn the heat up to high.

    You never see Prius in ads here, anymore. 2010 was a different story, much more prevalent.

    Advertising doesn't affect us one bit. We buy used and have the performance and reliability information to help us with our purchasing decisions. I must admit that the Ioniq advertising I've seen and heard is devastatingly effective against the Prius to new buyers, though.

    Should the Ioniq have the reliability over time that the Toyotas exhibit, when it comes time to replace one of our cars in 5 or 6 years we'll get one if the price is right. It won't, however, be because of the advertising.

    As counterpoint, how many potential buyers skipped on the Prius because of the advertising? Prii sales are dropping, and it all can't be blamed on low fuel prices.

    When the Prius c arrived, the over 50mpg city rating was pretty prominent on the Toyota site.

    RCO plans be AWOL :D for about 3 weeks but wanted me to assure people he is OK.
