Toyota Turns Gas Prices to its Advantage

In Boulder, Colo., some dealers are reporting sales backlogs of as much as eight months. And across the country, Toyota Motors Sales has recorded "22,000 back orders now, which will take four to five months to fill," Don Esmond, general manager of the Toyota division, tells TheCarConnection.com.

Original plans called for Prius sales to hit 35,000 annually, but in June alone, volumes nudged 4000, and Prius should soar past 47,000 for all of 2004 - unless the hybrid boom proves unexpectedly short-lived. And Toyota doesn't expect that to happen.

Considering how many dealerships are currently firmly convinced that their wait-lists will take up to two years to clear out, either he knows more than he's saying about how much more production is coming to America's shores in the next few months; or he's badly out of touch with his dealerships; or he's lying.

Myself, I hope it's the first option :-D
