Well, at least they're admitting it. And they're not entirely wrong since EV's are still just a small fraction of total vehicle sales around the world.

That said, I wonder what would've become of the Rav4 EV if they continued to improve it. Or at least offered a plug-in hybrid version.

    And dealers can sell FCVs?

What about hybrids? Some dealerships still rather not sell them.

What they mean is they make money on service but not with EV service.

Yep, there is the annual inspection of the fuel tank, high pressure fuel lines that can develop leaks, the tank will eventually have to be replaced, the uncertainities of the fuel cell life, plus the air compressor, and potential problems with an exhaust system.

It could be less work than what an ICE needs, but these are bigger ticket items.

(this comment may be a little off topic, but also on topic)
If dealers in USA cant sell EV`s i gotta be honest and say u got some shit dealers lol, Model 3 is outselling alot of cars even without dealerships in Europe and USA. Isnt the model 3 one of the best selling sedans in USA?

People here in Norway keep saying "hydrogen is the future" and keep complaining about electric cars and how they arent good enough... Like... Hydrogen cars r electric cars lol, plus as said above, the maintnence cost on the hydrogen system... Plus how much energy it takes to produce liquid hydrogen... We dont have that technology yet for it to be an real alternative to Electric only... what i think is the Best is to move over to EV`s then see if hydrogen is at all needed after that. Considering how insnanly fast battery technolgy is evolving (is that even the right word considering "evoloving" is a biological term used to explain the change in spieces around the world? lol). But yea, by 2020, 600 mile/1000km range is for sure possible, roadster will have it as a 200kw battery pack and hopefully Rivian will also make it with its 180kwt. I think that we will see alot happen in the car market these next 10 years, some old car companies will dissapear cause they did not switch over to EV`s soon enough and new new-thinking companies will rise, as tesla did. I find it ridiculous how cars like the Kona only have a 40 KW and a 60KW battery option.. Like what the heck is that sh!t... Way to small, and they claim it will do 400km... which it for sure wont... it will do maximum 200km if not 170km on a full charge here in Norway with our variable weather. Aint weird these car companies r falling behind when they cheap out on such vital components such as batteries, Kona has only gotten critique for having such a small battery here. Considering how much bigger the states is the Norway (like, 25 times, Norway is as big as a state in USA) i can not imagine it will get "accepted" with its small battery pack options...

But what is even crazier is how Toyota isnt even considering selling their Corolla PHEV`s in Europe... Thats a really stupid move considering how crazy EV`s and plug in hybrids r selling here, around 45% of all new cars registred in Norway r EV`s, we have literally broken the world record with EV sales (thats without the plug in hybrid sales, cause those r still considered hybrids which stands for 28% of the sales), in 2015, 15% of the sales was EV`s, now that number has rised to 50% and will only keep going up. In all of Europe 37% of all cars sold r EV`s, and that number will also only rise now that both Toyota and VW have dropped diesels in Europe.
The new corolla hybrid is great, but it wont stand a chance against the Model 3 at the same price range... Corolla PHEV wouldve had a much better chance. In US u may get the corolla`s for like 18 000 dollars, but here cause of dumbass EU taxes they cost around 35 000 dollars, cause they burn fuel and everything has to have insane taxes in EU... But as for now EV`s dont have those taxes, which means u can get what will be the more expensive option in US for the same price here in Europe (atleast Norway).

Southeast Toyota refuses to sell plug-in Prius, much less anything else.

My Tesla stocks thanks Toyota dealers for letting grown up Prius customers to become Tesla customers.

color me ironic .... EV's are a few % of sales right now ... & so that's their excuse ..... yet EV's are growing WAY faster then hybrids ever did ..... AND, they continue to shove TV commercials down California's throat for their fool cell that they CAN't hardly give away, even w/ free (for now) hydrogen & massive incentives. The fool cell is a microscopic % of EV sales, yet it's still being pushed.

Could be that cheap gas and no big trucks and SUV's that are EV here in the US. When those are built then people will at least look at them. My wife was afraid of our Gen 2 Prius when we bought it and I didn't get a Prime because she was afraid they haven't proven themselves but then again my wife is afraid of everything.

My Prime is the last Toyota I will ever buy. I am convinced of that. Not that the Prime isn't good - it is fantastic. It is just that I have less confidence in Toyota every single year that they know what consumers really want. Their continuing and crazy FCV push convinces me that they've lost their collective design and marketing minds. I also hope I'm eventually proven completely wrong on all accounts (except the FCV's) and Toyota surprises everyone with a BEV that sells well.

Well, hey. It's insideevs reporting it so I'm very suspicious of misrepresentation or outright falsehood. Might be appropriate to start doubting the existence of electricity.

    This article Intimates that dealerships are able to push manufacturing around and what they say goes. Why isn't this question posed to the dealers then;

"you can't sell EV's - yet Tesla can crank out over 5,000 units a month - with ZERO advertising? & why is that .... & how is it YOU can't do it? "

How would Mr. Dealer reconcile that question with an answer - one wonders.

There's nowhere near enough context in that piece to properly evaluate the core question. Were the dealers asked if they thought they could sell Teslas if given the chance? Were they asked if they could sell equal volumes of gas & electric versions of the same car at the same price? Was there a burning Fisker Karma in the room where they were asked?

What we are left with is a vague and weird Venn diagram. A car type that dealers don't think they can sell, eagerly being bought by people who would go to great lengths to avoid the dealer experience.
