To you, it may seem appropriate because you have made that decision about them all being equally likely to reoffend. I am simply stating that based on the stats and research, that is not appropriate, because they simply aren't at an equally risky. You are certainly free to say that a whole class of people are equally risky or bad, just like you can for cars. Just as malorn loves to point out, doesn't mean it's true.

The negatives are that a person has a belief that is incorrect and the lack of distinction between who is truly risky and who isn't can dilute the effectiveness of the registry by spending resources on keeping track of/monitoring those that aren't at risk. As more and more offenders become registered, I suspect that law enforcement and other justice resources will be stretched more and more.

Both Schmika and myself discussed people only focusing on sex offenders is because that is usually what most people do. They use the sex offender registery to see if they are any in their area and then feel their kids are safe when they are far from it. I am in no way saying that sex offender registeries are a bad thing because there are some truly dangerous sexual predators out there (like the ones mentioned by se tx mentioned) , but that how these registeries are current used by most people isn't very helpful, especially when these third party sites don't give the necessary information to determine risk.

I can't help but laugh that you mention the intolerant right wing of me in response. Since I am probably one of the most staunch right-wingers you will find on here (shhh, don't tell anyone...I voted for Bush and would do so again). From reading Schmika's posts, I get the impression he falls more on the right side of the aisle as well. Don't get the impression that I am saying just life and let life. I would argue that there are some sex offenders that should be never be allowed to get back into society, even if it was their first offense.

Oh for chrissakes, does NO ONE UNDERSTAND!!!!!!! No one is arguing the level of riskiness. I totally accept what the statistics show blah, blah, blah, fine, whatever, perv. A is less likely to jerk off on an older woman than perv. B because perv. B likes MILFS. What I'm doing, is taking the lowest common denominator of "sex crime", and, defaulting to the side of safety, and EXCLUDING the WHOLE class.

Again, this is the BEST analogy: "Not all GM cars are equally good, some are better than others, but they are ALL GM"

Given, I say, "To HELL with ALL of GM, I don't care whether or not model A is worse or better than model B", I'm just going to AVOID GM COMPLETELY.

No doubt. Or they pick on kids that are already showing some behavior problems. This way, more behavior problems aren't unusal or people won't believe the kids if they say something is wrong.

BTW, that is a sweet avatar. I wish I would have seen that before I got my tattoo.

I completetly understand what you are saying. I just think it is folly. For instance, I looked up the sex offenders in Lubbock and there were like 198. There is no way I can remember all of them or any kids I show pictures to are going to remember them. Even picking one section there may be 40 or 50 in a five mile radius. I stand by my earlier assertion that it is better to teach our kids about people being inappropriate and what to do in those situations rather than focusing on a general list.

Be careful, you have are close to exceeding the maximum allowed # of clickable smilies, emoticons, whatever the heck they are.

EDIT: LOL, I was being facetious about the emoticons, but when replying I actually got a message said I exceeding the number of emoticons since I had your post quote twice.

message boards are stupid. peope interject their own logic into other peoples arguments....

Who said anything about being able to remember them all??? OR focusing on SO SPECIFICALLY overall?

What it boils down to is this: If someone next door is a sex offender, I don't want any member of my family going there, and to be careful everytime they go near there. Do I care if he/she was convicted of this or that? NO. Does this somehow exclude any form of teaching about ANYONE being inappropriate? NO.

You think it's folly? Fine, I'm sure schmika (and a whole swath of other people) thinks flying through traffic and pulling wheelies is "folly", habitually speeding is folly, will it stop me from doing it? You got it. :D

We see victims from all walks of life....doesn't matter rich, poor, white, black, educated or not. We ask the offender's why they committed the crime and I can tell you that we get all kinds of BS for answers...from "My wife and I were having problems and she/he showed me unconditional love." to "She was coming onto me." (regarding the molestation of a 6 year old girl). Please give me a break...they were looking to control someone or they didn't in retaliation for something the victim's parent might have done to the aggressor. We see this where the vic's mom was dating or had married the offender. One of the ones that turned my stomach (believe me it takes alot after what i have seen over the years) was a pastor at a small church that took some troubled teenage girls in and convinced them that having sexual relations with him would exorcise their demons. This was done over a lengthy period of time. It took awhile for the girls to gather up the courage to tell someone about. A pastor is someone whom you "should" be able to trust.

As for the avatar...it also comes in a T-shirt B) ...let me know and I will tell u where I found it. Hope all is well for the "Cowboy" in Raiderland...Gotta say "Guns up!" for my two Tech Alumni brothers...I am a closet Aggie!! (Went to an A&M branch and no, it wasn't WTAMU-too close to home)

Thanks for letting me rant a little.....Sex offenders can be a pain to deal with while they are still in custody..Many believe that they are innocent and have been "framed". I can see where a pre-teen or teenager can be "coached" but a 2,3, or 4 yr old...The youngest victim that I have come across was an 18 mth old girl.

A little pot calling the kettle black there Squid? Since all of my original points was that the lists give the illusion of safety and people shouldn't be focused on them so much. I never said they shouldn't know when someone is living next door or whatever. I also never said that knowing if a sex offener is next door doesn't mean they won't exclude teaching about people in general. I just said that too many people do stop at the registery and don't do much teaching if any. My original points were thinking that being able to look at a list makes your kids safe is ignorant (note: don't insert your own logic here). My point was about remembering them all that a person can know who is maybe on their block who is a sex offender, but to know or educate your kids about the ones they might come into contace with at the local park, around the neighborhood with their friends, walking to school, etc, etc, isn't possible in many cases.

Note that all of this is in the context of all my posts that:

    1. Registeries don't make our kids safe.

    2. Focusing exclusively on registeries puts our kids in danger.

    3. It is better to focus on who is really at risk to hurt our kids (including sex offenders that are risky).

    4. Registeries aren't inherently bad, just often misused.

    5. Some sex offenders should never be released.

P.S. Speed, pop wheelies, all you want, it's your life. If I drive by someone pulled over for doing that, I feel good that the patrol system is working and I hope it slows them down so they don't put someone else's life in danger. :D

Don't bother, Rich Kid doesn't listen to logic and will go out of his way to push the arguement so far into Left Field you'd need a plane ticket to get back to Square One.

This is fun. Now that I know what button to push with Rich Kid, I'm really going to have fun. Of course the rest of the world gets to see a sad example of the Upper Middle Class Entitlement mentality.

And when in doubt, it's always good to knock down Canada too. I seem to recall the single largest source of U.S. oil imports is Canada. Hmmm perhaps Canada should consider the Chinese market.

Oh wait, they already are! Can you say $5/gal??

Thanks for the offer, but I think one flag/eagle tattoo is enough. I really dont' have a desire to get another one. Well being a Cowboy in Raiderland has it's moments, like when OSU beat Tech in football this year. But it can lead to a lot of strife too. The most annoying thing that everyone thinks that if you are in Lubbock (not even mentioning if you are going to Tech) you have to be a Red Raider fan. (Not that I don't in general, but I'm not a true fan). It recently got a little better in finding out I am getting close to being finished up with my degree. It's just a matter of time now. (Nothing against Lubbock, but I really don't want to stay in TX longer than I have to). I guess I should say Gig' em for the Aggie (but not too loud, since you didn't go to the real aTm ( ;) ).

I find that most offfenders can be a pain to deal with. They are almost all innocent in some way or another. It is probably easier to coach a young kid than a pre-teen or teenage, but I find it hard to believe that this coaching happens enough to get convictions.

You might should thank squid, he's usually the one that starts the thread that gets people ranting. The whole sex offender think (and most hot/controversial topics) seem to be cyclical where there will be a thread every so often and pull will say their piece. Then another thread comes up later on about the same thing and people say their piece again.

Wait a minute, so rational thought coming from Canada? Dang, something for my miracle book! (Sorry had to get in on the Canada bashing....it makes me feel more American.)

Isn't this one of your shortest posts ever jayman? Another miracle. :D

Thanks for the tip though, I don't actually believe that I can change the mind of Squid, but I gotta think there might be someone out there reading his posts that are on the fence. Like that person said (I can't remember who said it) All it takes for Squid to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

Good question. I suggest you ask the 12 police officers I allow to go bird hunting on my property every fall. Several of them are members of the Winnipeg ICE (Integrated Child Exploitation) Unit. I should also mention the full background check they did when we had a few projects with them last year - clean as a whistle.

Gotta admit Rich Brat, you're fun to debate with.

Didn't Ted Bundy pass background checks too? lol
