Traction battery gauge

    My 2012 Prius v has a traction battery gauge beside the fuel gauge. The gauge has never shown that the battery is full. It appears as if the indicator is 2 bars below full at all times. Is this by design or should the gauge look full with bars to the very top after charging on a long trip?

    No worries, mate. Normal. On flat terrain, anyway. Hills and mountains? Totally different story.

    Congrats on your first post. There's much you need to learn. Google "Prius HV battery SOC or Prius HV battery state of charge" and you'll find the answers to your questions.

    Nope, that is normal. You'll see it fill more if you were going down a long hill with your foot off the gas. Dont bother watching that gauge much though, the car will manage the traction battery as necessary.

    Yup, that's exactly what I used to do until fairly recently - watch the SOC. Now I have the screen displaying the average mpg every 5 minutes. Much less distracting. Some day, I'll be able to turn off "Big Brother" altogether - LOL!

    After 24,000 km of driving the v, I saw the guage full for the first time​
    Going down mountainous road next to a ski hill
    Me: "Hey look the battery guage is full"
    Wife: (yawn) "Yes, that's nice"
