So my transmission totally failed yesterday. Gave it some gas, tires slipped on wet road, and boom, warning lights, no power, and a NASTY grinding sound with lots of vibration from the engine bay.

The smell was really bad too. Obviously something is seriously wrong. Does anyone have experience with this?

The car will not move at all in gear. Took it to the dealer. Worried about the bill.

Curious about the total mileage, and if the transmission fluid was ever changed?

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

Once the codes are read, post them up here ;).

Were there any other issues with your Prius prior to this incident?

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Even if you can DIY, insurance will estimate the the repair cost and if it is within 80% of the estimated value, it’s scrapped:(.

I’m waiting with popcorn to see why this particular 07 is worth saving:cool:.

Coming full circle now, so you can get back up to speed quickly.

Dealer will be asking for north of 4k.

A used transmission is around $500, and the R+R could be as little as $500+ (depending how hungry someone is).

Now might be a good time to look for another vehicle, and or find a local mechanic who can do a swap with a used transmission.

If you worried about the price don't go to the dealer. Used transmissions for this car are going to be Dirt Cheap since nobody ever needs them. How many miles on yours? Fluid never changed right?

My car is an ‘09 Touring package 6 with 159K on it. Worth probably $5K. Bought at 120K and have never changed the fluid, per Toyota.

It is in Wichita, KS. Anyone know any independent Toyota mechanics in the area?

I get the news tomorrow. I am not expecting it to be good.

Is it defintely just the tranny? What else could it be? I’m seeing some used ones for between $250-$500. If I can get a good mechanic to do the job, I may survive this.

Never really used one while in Wichita .

But L&M auto repairs off of 43rd street is one a couple of people I knew out there used:).

Might be worth a call if nothing else(y).

The only issue I noticed was a jerkiness at around 30 MPH when the ICM engaged. It was quite a hefty jerk.

Dealer just called. Transaxle failure. $6,800 parts and labor!

I’m gonna buy a used tranny for much less, but they are asking for the damper assembly and if it comes with it. Does anyone know what they mean? I can’t get an answer from the part supplier if it will be included. Thanks.
