Anyone know if this has to be aligned like regular clutch? If so what tool is needed to do it?

I've never seen anybody emphasizing a need to do it. Maybe there isn't a pilot bearing behind it, as a regular clutch would have, as it's never really meant to spin.

No I meant when it is taken off the engine how it it put back on.

Is it bolted to the flywheel no slack or is there a pressure plate type of system that needs a guide to center it.

I ask because I'm getting ready to do a engine rebuild and would like to replace rear seal which needs fly wheel taken off.

That's what I meant also. I have never seen anyone on PriusChat emphasize a need for a pilot tool.

With a regular clutch, if you reassemble without a pilot tool, the disc might be a little off center, enough to stop you cold from reattaching the transmission, because the input shaft will go through the splines of the clutch disc but then be not exactly centered with the pilot bearing in the center of the flywheel, and won't go in.

I was thinking maybe the reason nobody ever reports that problem reassembling a Prius tranny into the damper is that maybe the Prius flywheel doesn't have a pilot bearing in the center.

    ok then. My bad.

In the manual doesn't say an alignment tool is needed. Since I haven't had it apart yet I don't know what to expect. I do know its impossible to put an engine together without a clutch in perfect alignment.

Kinda looks like it might be self-centering being recessed into flywheel.

Answer is no aligning tool needed. There is self aligning pins.

Gen 3 and on is self contained unit that bolts to flywheel and uses guide pins

Gen 2 is similar to assembling a clutch but it is self all aligning into the flywheel. 1570890563724.jpeg

Nope it is between transmission and engine so one of them needs to be out to have access to the damper itself. Input shaft to transmission is mostly in the transmission.
