No way you can get a NEW tranny installed at dealer for $2k. They usually charge $4500-$6000 installed. I think slapointe was able to get the dealer to install a used tranny. Not all dealers offer used parts and/or customer supplied parts installation. YMMV.

Having a long-term relationship with the service advisor and service manager makes bending the rules achievable.

I have never seen a dealer install used parts, no one would buy new from their parts department ........but anything is possible I guess

My CT dealer installed a rebuilt HV battery in my 2004 Prius about 3 years ago as discussed above.

According to a private transmission repair shop that I normally deal with, Prius' transmission is much simpler to repair than a normal transmission.

Careful, the MGs are part of the Transmission in a Prius and the few failures that have occurred were shorted turns in the MGs. There are many salvaged Prii transmissions available at reasonable cost, so that is you best solution if you have tranny problems.

Our 'transaxle' is out dead gone at 125k miles we are they only owners. Have been quoted the high $5k price to replace it. Know what the car at best is worth only $6,500-7,000. It uses a quart of synthetic oil between oil changes has done so since January this year. I guess we could part it out and try and sell the battery pack yes? Lithia Toyota Medford trade-in guy said he'd give us $100.00 for the car! This experience has left me without a car. The Prius has not been mistreated. It didn't get the tran fluid change --should have came with a warning label....

sorry to hear it, this is extremely unusual. changing the oil most likely wouldn't have helped.
why not shop around for a used tranny?

also, it might be worth calling toyota and asking for goodwill discount.

call these people.. ask about a used tranny Luscious Garage | Hybrid Specialists
just sell it on craigs list as is for $1800 if you don't want to invest the money, people will want the air bags, battery and cat converters but little else. and they don't want to pay for them, best to sell it as a whole unit

Sorry Richard but, they do. My buddy just had his replaced in Virginia Beach. It first started making grinding noises, as it had dried out ball bearings; then the car would not go past 30 mph and then froze.
He bought a used one from eBay and had some backyard Mechanic replace it for under $700. Total cost, including shipping and R/R @$1200.00

When Richard posted that back in 2006, that probably was the case. Not surprising that, 11 years later, things are changing.

Even so, transaxle failures are still very infrequent.

And even less frequent for Prii that have had periodic ATF drain/refill maintenance. I have still never heard of a Prius transaxle failure when the ATF was kept clean.

Strange, strange, strange, that Toyota is so adamant in their stance, on transaxle fluid changes not being needed. A reversal would be a concession, "loss of face"? (n)

    Or maybe "loss of $'s"?
