Source: Tree planting 'has mind-blowing potential' to tackle climate crisis | Environment | The Guardian

Planting billions of trees across the world is by far the biggest and cheapest way to tackle the climate crisis, according to scientists, who have made the first calculation of how many more trees could be planted without encroaching on crop land or urban areas.

As trees grow, they absorb and store the carbon dioxide emissions that are driving global heating. New research estimates that a worldwide planting programme could remove two-thirds of all the emissions that have been pumped into the atmosphere by human activities, a figure the scientists describe as “mind-blowing”.

The analysis found there are 1.7bn hectares of treeless land on which 1.2tn native tree saplings would naturally grow. That area is about 11% of all land and equivalent to the size of the US and China combined. Tropical areas could have 100% tree cover, while others would be more sparsely covered, meaning that on average about half the area would be under tree canopy.

Great idea, but we need to at least keep up with the trees we take. Old growth forest is going fast to make room for grazing lands because meat.

Fake meat has been around for a long time. Just go to one of those vegan eateries. You can have "beef", "chicken", "duck", "rabbit". HEck you could probably have "human" if they weren't so uptight. Problem is processed protein for "meat" is probably more environmentally unfriendly than meat.

    Has it gotten better?

I tried it decades ago and found it not very palatable.

I sometimes enjoy Veggie burgers from Trader Joe's. They are not made of fake "beef", they are actually made with veggies and are not trying to be "burgers". They are more like an Indian samosa in a shape of a burger. Pretty tasty.

    Another media summary:

How trees could save the climate -- ScienceDaily

This is more very good work from Tom Crowther's group at ETH Zurich. Earlier when he was at Yale, calculated that Earth has ~3 trillion trees. One could do a lot worse than to follow their publications.

Hummm, now I have to answer the difficult conundrum. To fell trees to clear a way to install the solar panels or leave them?

The latest ones that were mentioned use a heme group from a vegetable source which gives a meat like flavor and 'bloodiness' to the product. The plants don't make enough, so the genes were spliced into a yeast or fungus.

Depending on the tree, you can collect the sugar, and make ethanol for any ICEs you still have.

"To fell trees" @14. If I have a vote here it would be no. Trees are very good at converting sunlight into ecosystem services. PV is a one-trick dog.

Sal King should assess all southern exposure land to select areas where least felling yields sufficient open sky. To go full Tochatihu requires cut wood to be left to decay in situ.

Who would do that, right? :)
