    Lan did the rapid intensification thing we have seen several times this year. Moving now over cooler water. Besides Tokyo we could have concern that Fukushima radioisotope storage is not very sturdy.

    For accumulated cyclone energy, I found annual data for all basins at Colorado State Univ. So far this year only North Atlantic is notably on the high side. NW Pacific has been pretty chill. Not meaning few typhoons, but not many large (as Lan has become). All the wind-energy products (not just ACE) use wind speed squared (or some similar exponent) so metrics are appropriately heavily weighted towards larger events.
