Getting a proper patch is either free from the tire shop where bought or $15 at a local used tire shop. The free shop includes inside tire inspection and balance. The v has a spare which has been used twice in 14 years for less than a day.

Here, tire repairs (with a combined patch and plug) and rebalancing are free at the American Tire Depot locations, even if you didn’t buy the tire from them.

I have had good success using plugs over many years. This Project Farm video gives me confidence that they are pretty good - especially for a vehicle that alarms if the tire pressure drops below an acceptable level. He repairs a tire with 100 plugs at 12:07 in the video:

So, only after six weeks, I got a nail in the same right rear tire. Since it had a two-year warranty, I took it to Downey Toyota again today and had it replaced with a brand-new one free of charge under warranty. (They don’t repair tires at Toyota dealers.) In hindsight, I was very lucky that Priority Tire had sent me the wrong tire and I had got it from the Toyota dealer instead. From now on, I will only get them from the Toyota dealer, considering the nail/screw issues and warranty.

@Mendel Leisk, why do I keep getting these nails/screws in my tire? This is the third one in six months in the same tire. Have you had a similar problem? During the first four years, I had no nails/screws.

Why does the chicken cross the road? The answer is literal and straightforward. Same with nails. Generally construction areas have them on the road. Some garages have stuff lying around as well.

There's one corner of a nearby Rona parking lot (lumber/hardware place up here) I stay clear of: it's where they sometimes stack bundled lumber. The bundles are typically wrapped with thin-plastic tarp material, secured with long staples shot through little plastic disks. The workers there have a propensity to pull the covers off right there in the parking lot, and those staples-disk combos fly all over the place, and more-often-than-not end up with staple tips pointing skyward. Besides car tires, an unpleasant surprise if you're wearing thin-sole shoes...

Hey there, same thing happened to me and after I realize these factory tires just get flats due to the nature of their low profile, I decided to just switch my entire wheel setup and use 235/45 for my tires, never had an issue since, cross my fingers. Cheers!

So, low tire pressure warning light came again tonight, and it was once more the right rear tire. It is a slow leak. The RọcGọrld R8 digital tire pump that now I always carry in my trunk is a lifesaver.

This is the fourth nail/screw in the right rear tire in about a year. What is going on? Why is it always the same tire?

The new right rear tire that is under warranty was rotated to the left front five months ago. This one has no warranty, but the nail is in the outer groove; so, it is in a repairable area (outer groove being the official limit). I will get a free plug and patch at American Tire Depot during the day.

Your probably doing a lot of parallel parking. Road debris usually ends up in the gutter and you back into them while your parallel parking. Add to that the OEM LLR tires are thin 35K-40K mile tires.
I got around 4 flats on my OEM tires too. Replaced them with heavier 85K mile tires and pulled a nail out of one on my last rotation. It didn't penetrate the tire - just pulled it out, no leaks. I did lose a few mpgs with those new tires.

Not a lot of parallel parking, but that's quite a possibility. The last time I parked at a curb was two days earlier. Perhaps that's when it happened.

If its in a residential area, and you park there often, someone might have had their roof redone. Lots of nails and staples as a result of that in particular, and if they dont clean up well enough, those nails will end up *everywhere* with bad weather.

It was in a residential area but I had never parked there before. At other times, I park at a curb only in a commercial area.

So, it wasn’t the curb parking on Saturday. It loses pressure overnight. I drove in the Walmart parking lot on Sunday night. The only place that I regularly back out is out of my garage door. No nails for four years and then four nails in one year and all in the same tire? Coincidence? I should invest in a security camera over my garage door.

I had the puncture repaired, the tire unmounted, plugged-and-patched, then mounted and balanced. It was free thanks to the shop’s policy. It was the second repair on this tire.

The shop manager told me that the road debris was to blame. He had four punctures in one year in the right front tire of his brand-new SUV. The last one couldn’t be repaired and he got a new tire because three repairs per tire is the maximum allowed for safety reasons.

    They did both?
Here they're not allowed to do plugs, only patches-they said.
I'm thinking of getting a plug kit.
Thing is, how do you practice if it isn't at night by the side of the road? :)

I wouldn’t entertain a side-of-road plug-repair, unless no other option. Having a spare on our 10, with the one out-and-about flat I put on that spare, drove home, did the plug repair in the family room. It was barely above zero centigrade that day, and breezy.

A good reason for a spare.

If a roadside repair, I’d likely still remove the wheel: so much easier to find the puncture, and pushing in plug repair tools (reamer, then needle) is easiest done while straddling the wheel.
