    UAW pushing for mandatory average fuel milage - 06/18/07

    The UAW is joining major automakers in their position on mandatory average fuel mileage standards.

    The United Auto Workers union is supporting a bipartisan proposal to increase fuel economy standards. It’s an amendment to the energy bill that would boost gas mileage requirements by 31 percent for passenger cas and 35 percent for light trucks. The amendment requires a corporate average fuel economy of 36 miles per gallon for cars by 2022. Trucks would have to reach 30 miles per gallon by that year. The UAW says this is a responsible approach that would improve the environment while also protecting jobs and benefits for active and retired auto workers. Automakers like GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Toyota and Volkswagon also support the fuel mileage amendment.

    45 years later it takes us twice as many years to get some measly incremental increase in fuel efficiency??? :huh:

    WAY TO GO UAW!!! <_<

    With such forward thinking, no wonder the domestic auto industry is in the sad shape it is. :(

    Agreed. The reason the UAW is supporting this legislation is because they (and auto manufacturers) are desperately trying to avoid conforming to bill proposed by California Senator Dianne Feinstein which calls for acheiving better fuel efficiency sooner.

    It's funny how some are spinning this story to make it seem like the reason auto manufacturers and the UAW want this legislation is because they care about our fuel consumption. The reality is that they support it because it acheives results slower than the alternative.

    Geez, why does the UAW continue to do everything within its power to kill the geese which lay golden eggs?

    CAFE is a waste of time.

    Tax gas guzzlers, and give incentives for high MPG vehicles.

    Under 30 mpg: $5k tax
    Over 40 mpg: $5k present

    Increase the bar every year.
