I am unable to start my Prius by pushing on the brake as I have done the past 10 years, and it will only start if I put the whole key fob in the slot. Before I take this to the dealer wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this problem.

Do you know there is a button under the steering wheel which enables/ disables this function? check if you have pressed it somehow by mistake. it happened to me also but checked manual and found out.

    welcome?
when was the last time you replaced the fob batteries, or tested the 12 volt battery health?

You should still have to press the brake even with the key in the slot, right? If not, that's very odd.

If so, sounds like SKS is disabled or the fob battery is dead.

It actually was the button under the steering wheel that was accidentally depressed so I fixed it thanks to the previous reply! And no, when you put key in you just have to push power button and not the brake unless I am forgetting.

yes, you're forgetting.:p all cars require brake depression to start, it's a safety lockout.

My Gen 1 Prius does not require brake to be depressed when starting.
Just turn the key and go.

Whether fob in slot or out of slot, you must depress the brake to get into Ready mode.
Confirmed in my 2005 (Gen 2) Prius that has smart key.

Same on Gen 4. I am pretty sure that is the case on my son's 2015 Prius v too.

If bisco had said, "almost all modern cars require brake depression ...", he'd have been spot on.
