That looks really good David. I wish I could ambition myself to do something similar. ;)

I'm happy to offer more step by step details and pics. Once I lined up the center of the spare tire with the mounted "nut" that receives the tie down bolt, it was easy to mark a two-foot diameter on the foam for cutting. A handheld drywall saw cut through the foam without too much difficulty. And the sense of satisfaction was a great payoff! :)

A couple of more details to add for the sake of completeness. I purchased the spare tire tie down bolt (Spare Retainer - Toyota (51931-47030)) from the dealer for about $12. The bolt itself was about an inch too long, so I cut a piece of 2x4 to use as a spacer. Not a big deal--it fits great--but wanted to put that out there. Maybe there's a shorter bolt to purchase instead.

    See attached pictures. Good luck!

I did not buy the retainer. Instead, part of my negotiations at the dealership when i traded in my 2012 was to keep both the tire and the retainer. The retainer from the gen3 works with no modification needed, at least with the gen3 rim

doing the same thing. ordered the left and right surround foam pieces and a 15" full size spare for my 2018 prius 4. 15" steelies were no longer in stock , so i went with one of their aftermarket aluminum wheels that matched the OEM wheel specs. cost a little more but no worries with fitment.

I dont know if they will wake.... i thought as of 2018 only the 3 touring comes with a spare now where the 4 touring once did. I believe i saw that on the window stickers recently. Can someone confirm?

There are a lot of Toyota customers that think a good size trunk, a place for a spare tire, is basic and for Toyota to drop this concept is absolutely IGNORANT. Both items will affect my next car choice.

IIRC that was the case for (US) 2016 and 2017 model year too? The models with spare were 2, 3 and 3 touring? Not sure about the recently added 1, but think spareless.

I'm glad I had a full size spare. I had a flat today after a nail had punctured my tire. Just to see, I tried to use the patch/pump kit. It didn't work at all. So I swapped on my spare. I went to the dealer who doesn't have that tire in stock, and has to contact the road hazard insurance on Monday to order a new one. It may be delivered next week, maybe not. It's a nice feeling to have a full sized spare and a fully driveable car in the meantime.

Let's just hope I don't get another flat in the next week.

Was the flat deemed unrepairable? The goop fill might have been the deciding factor.

I have a tire protection package. Their first offer was to replace the tire before even bothering to inspect to see if it could be patched. They had the car back for a while before the service advisor told me that it wasn't patchable. I'm not sure what the deciding factor was. I don't think they even took the tire off the rim.

I wonder if they want to just sell a new tire under the insurance.

I did drive on it for more than a mile flat before I noticed the warning light... so I actually prefer getting a replacement.
