can you imagine the fierce competition between apple car and google car. I assume the google car will drive itself. what exactly will the apple car do besides being fashionable?

You'll be able to drive the Google Car on any open-source road you like.

The Apple Car can only be driven on proprietary iRoads controlled by Apple.

Apple rose out of the ashes by embracing (and not 'extending,' aka corrupting like MS) open data and internet standards. By analogy, Apple would support open roads for all cars but AppleCar owners could be pretty sure that their radio could not be transplanted into a Chevy.

Or, if you like your Apple with a little techno-speak on top, consider the photo management program iPhoto:
    • The photos are typically open-source jpegs. No proprietary Apple format exists
    • The database that holds the photos meta-info is open-source
    • The App that acts as an interface to it all is proprietary
Apple does not hold data hostage, and Apple does not prevent inter-communication between competing devices. Which is why my family happily uses a mix of Apple, Google, and Android, but absolutely no MS.

Which is the opposite of how they treat the music on the iPod and iTunes. Music files are in their own format, and there are open source formats for music.
While they don't hold data hostage, they might be wiping non-iTunes purchased music from apple music players.

The entire "we developed USB, but don't want to use USB plugs on our devices" is the reason I won't buy one.

What format would that be ? All my music is MP3, and music downloaded from iTunes is m4a. Both are open standards.

As for USB, I agree that the lightning connector does not seem to have a particularly valid reason to exist other than removing the need for an HDMI jack, but as I said above, making a blanket statement that Apple is proprietary misses the very important; nee, all important, areas where Apple is a model open standard citizen.

Contrast that with MS, which e.g. cannot even leave XML or openDoc alone. Anybody who whines about Apple's closed garden tactics but uses MS anything is .... shall we say, barking up the wrong tree. How quickly people forget the reason they bought the latest and most bloated version of MS Office: to read the newest MS format, of course !

In California cars without drivers are being tested on designated public roads. They are intended for handicapped people that have plenty of money to spare. The big thing on the front burner right now is hydrogen cars. They are being tested in Japan only. Down the road someday, we might have cold fusion cars. Put a gallon of water in the tank and it will take you as far as a full tank of gasoline will take you today.

They won't work in Canada. The "fuel" freezes solid.

Both are owned by RCA and Apple respectively, and commercial use requires the paying of licensing fees.

The Mac OS is legally closed by Apple. Going to Intel meant it could be used on any widely available machine. Apple's license agreement forbids that though. Hasn't stopped people from building a Hackintosh.

Work uses MS. At home and on a satellite machine, I use Open/Libre Office. I also limit the number of Adobe products I use at home. Quick time was one of the more annoying programs that was on my PC though. I used it maybe once, but it kept wanting to install iTunes until I finally uninstalled it.

The car without a driver I saw in California was a Prius. I don't know who is owner of these cars. (Probably the government) In Germany, they are testing driver less racing cars only. This type of no human driver controlling the vehicle was first started in the late 1950, but for airplanes only. Since that time they have developed it into a fine art. They have already flew pilot less airplanes around the world. They have a device in commercial jets that take control of the plane if it is violated by a terrorist that will have absolute control of the plane and land it where it is programmed to do. The terrorist or the pilot has no control over the plane.

As is often the case, the technology exists far in advance of it's actual implementation. Another good example is the Costa Concordia shipwreck. The technology to prevent an idiot captain from steering the ship onto the rocks (allegedly to impress his friends on-shore) certainly existed, but apparently no one thought a cruise company would ever hire an idiot captain, and ever need it.

I always wondered if the antifreeze would effect this type car. Maybe there would b
I always wondered about the antifreeze problem. With mature cold fusion there is unlimited energy that they can use for keeping the water above 32 degrees and use some highly efficient insulator. Today, in PA they tell us troubled souls that with the wind chill factor the temperature will go to 25 degrees below zero! With that kind of cold we can challenge Canada. We in NJ and PA have earthquakes that Californians brag that they only use those kind to flip pancakes and hamburgers.
