    All,

I have a gen 3 with 245K and my engine is gone. Deciding if I should buy a used engine or have my original rebuilt. I would prefer to purchase a remanufactured engine but don't know where. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Anyone have suggestions on what dealers are trustworthy? Of is that a violation of Forum policy?

Not against policy. Please post good and bad resellers, or any experience worth sharing.

Pretty hit or miss from what I've read over the years, as many don't always stand behind their used products or warranties.

Best to do your own due diligence before purchase and during pickup, no one wants to return a bad engine or do an install twice.

I've mostly heard good things about http://lkqonline.com/ - though your mileage may vary.

I tracked down the local LKQ trying to save the shipping and got quoted a price literally twice what I was seeing on eBay from the same company.

Yeah, be sure to also check their listings on https://car-part.com as the pricing may vary once again.

Can we get an idea what is fair? Does someone maintain a spreadsheet of the going rates?

In my case, I'm replacing the engine in a 2011 Prius, a Gen 3, and I'm located in Kansas City, MO.

Obviously, I'm looking to get the best deal I can, and trying to make this engine swap as easy as possible.

What is a fair price range?

Have you thought about looking into a gen 4 engine to put into you Prius? There are vids here and it looks very do able and the prices on engines are cheaper!!! Just google it! That is what I will do if and when it becomes new engine time! Good luck!,

Hard to say, i've seen gen3 pricing from 700 to over 2k. Many think they are sitting on gold, others have lower miles at decent prices. Some will show pics of the odometer, and if you can get the VIN then you can run that and check the recent mileage and see if it rhymes. Not sure about fair, as few if any will cover the labor to do the job over when they unintentionally (?) sell you a bad motor.

https://www.hybrid911.com claims to sell (and install) rebuilt motors, but I have no idea what that actually means, could be just a new head gasket and water pump, etc. Not sure if they offer shipping from southern CA.

There is always the gen4 option like @Sftbldad mentioned.

    _______________________________________

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH JAPANESE IMPORT ENGINES?

"JDM" STANDS FOR JAPANESE DOMESTIC MARKET. THESE ENGINES WERE USED IN JAPAN BEFORE THEY WERE EXPORTED TO THE U.S. THE AVERAGE JAPANESE DRIVER DRIVES THEIR CAR 50,000 MILES BEFORE TURNING THEIR VEHICLE IN.
    _______________________________________

    WHY ONLY 50,000 MILES?

EACH CAR MUST PASS THE "SHAKEN" TEST. THE FIRST TEST IS ADMINISTERED FOR PASSENGER VEHICLES AT YEAR 3 AND EVERY 2 YEARS AFTER. THE CAR MUST PASS ON MANY DIFFERENT LEVELS : EXTERIOR, SPEEDOMETER, HEADLIGHTS, EXHAUST AND EMISSIONS, SUSPENSION AND INTERIOR. ANYTHING NOT MEETING THE REQUIRED STANDARD MUST BE REPAIRED AND WHEN THE COST OF REPAIR OUTWEIGHS THE VALUE OF THE CAR IT IS EXPORTED OR RECYCLED. FOREIGN ENGINES IMPORTS THE RECYCLED ENGINES.

LOOKING FOR A HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINE AND/OR FRONT CLIP?

WE CARRY THOSE TOO! PLEASE CALL TO SEE IF WE'RE CARRYING WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR. ( WE KEEP IN STOCK EVERYTHING FROM SR20DET NISSAN ENGINES TO EJ207 SUBARU ENGINES )

HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS HAVE A 30 DAY WARRANTY.
    _______________________________________

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SHOPPING AROUND :

WARRANTY : MANY OTHER COMPANIES WILL ONLY COVER THEIR ENGINES OR TRANSMISSIONS FOR 30 TO 90 DAYS AND REQUIRE THAT THE MECHANIC BE CERTIFIED OR THE WARRANTY IS VOID. WE HAVE A ONE YEAR WARRANTY AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A CERTIFIED MECHANIC TO MAINTAIN YOUR WARRANTY.

RETURN SHIPPING : MANY OTHER COMPANIES WILL CHARGE YOU FOR RETURN SHIPPING. THEY WILL ALSO NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY IF THE ENGINE / TRANSMISSION DOES NOT FIT YOUR VEHICLE. FOREIGN ENGINES WILL PAY ALL RETURN SHIPPING CHARGES ON WARRANTY OR FITMENT ISSUES.

REVIEWS: READ REVIEWS OF THE COMPANIES YOU'RE CONSIDERING TO PURCHASE FROM. NOT ALL COMPANIES TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS IN THE SAME MANNER. IF THE WORD "POLICE" EVER COMES UP, RECONSIDER PURCHASING FROM THEM.

    Car dealers?

    NONE.

    Used Engine dealers?

YMMV, but generally speaking there are some that offer a decent quality product at a fair price.
