Vägverket, the Swedish Road Administration reported that GM/Saab were involved in using 10 human cadavers in crash testing. Both GM/Saab deny the allegations.

What is the origin of the hood ornament and what important driving-related function did many of them have?

Radiator cap is part of the answer.
They were more than just decoration though.
What was its driving-related function (besides keeping the water contained)?

Bingo. Many radiator caps had elaborate thermometers built into them so the driver could see the engine temperature while driving. The "motometer" became one of the first automotive accessories that you could purchase if the manufacturer hadn't thoughtfully included one in the design. Some of them were quite handsome (like the ones pictured) even the ones Ford used (far right) were quite ornate.
