Curious if anyone's has tried this the other way - instead of creating an adapter for the household outlet to be used in the 240V outlet - what about cutting off the household outlet from the EVSE and splicing on a 240V plug - simpler and safer (no risk of someone putting a regular 120v plug in).?

You lose the capability to charge from a 110 volt outlet.

I've read that there's a temperature sensor in the plug. Cutting it off is likely to prevent the EVSE from working. I haven't opened mine to confirm. And if the adapter is kept connected to the EVSE rather than the wall outlet, then no one can plug a 120V device into the outlet.

@tjay - I haven't been posting much this year except the last month of so, but I also haven't seen any new posts from Rob in that time either. You might want to look around in some of Robs other posts or in his profile for another way to contact him.

Or maybe someone else that knows Rob will see this and PM you or contact Rob and let him know about your PM.

@Rob43 I hope you are well. I and I'm certain a lot of others here at PC miss reading your posts.

It's not Rocket Surgery building these 'Not to Code, somewhat illegal, kind of unsafe Adapters'.

Anyone that can strip a wire and turn a screw driver can do it.

Two connectors, a foot or two of 12 or 10 ga. wire, from a trip to the Depot and Bob's your Uncle!(y)

Maybe Rob wised up to his legal 'exposure'....

I've seen a lot of worthwhile projects fall pray to the safety issue. Much like the Thomas Edison - Nikola Tesla controversy early on during the industrial revolution, many good / great ideas are lost to history due to controversial media attention and/or unscrupulous litigation. How much is it worth.
I sure hope Robs' protected from such. allowing him to provide those that want his customized solution to have him provide it to them.

    How much?
The cost of an actual L2 EVSE. In other words, not much. $175 - -

    (amazon link no workie...)
And while your at it, open that dusty old billfold a little bit more and buy a 40A L2. Future Proofing!
The Prime will not be your last EV!!

Ah. $50 or $200 let me do some quick calculations. Then I'll add the 40 amp service cost in my situation.
Sure I could get a new service box and subpanel. Got an estimate for me?

    No estimate.
    I need an estimate too.
I just bought a Bolt which is capable of using 40A EVSE.

Alas, I'm going to live with two 3.3kW / 20A EVSE's in the garage because,,,
I'm cheap and don't want to open my dusty old billfold and buy a proper 7.2 kW / 40A EVSE.

Even though I'm capable of running my own 240V / 40A service to the garage.
    cheep cheep.....:p

I assume you mean The Boss.;)

You're lucky. I'm in an old 100 Amp house.
Do I want to run the AC, Dry a load of clothes and Charge at 32 Amp? Probably not.....:(

Same here. I even had to add a sub panel for charging since the original was full. The water heater breaker was bigger than it needed to be so I used that to feed the sub and then used the sub for the water heater and the charging outlet. The extra 16A for the L2 charger didn't hurt anything and I was already pulling similar current with the L1, but I suspect that a 32A charger might be pushing it. I should check sometime when the wife is running the dryer and hot water at the same time as the AC is running. (Or check them one at a time sometime when I'm simultaneously bored and ambitious. :D)
