These kind of dealerships will NEVER get my business, If others (suckers? lemmings?) want to pay over MRSP, so be it, but I think they're crazy.

I've told dealerships with this practice that I will never buy from them, and I buy at least one car per year. There have been instances where the dealership has called me back weeks or months later offering to sell me their car for considerably less and/or practically begging me for their business. I've told one or two of them that I'll beep the horn (of the car not bought from them) when I pass them.

No, they will "try" to get the money no matter what. I have seen slow selling cars with these markups.

More likely, they have 2009s they still need to sell and this will push buyers towards the 2009s so they can clear them out.
Othwersie people will say: "Why buy a 2009 if I can get a 2010 for just a little more and make up the difference with extra resale value?"

Hey 9G-Man, best price I found in Atlanta was Team Toyota. They quoted me MSRP + 750 dealer fee. They have only gotten 1 Gen 3 Prius in so far and it had navigation (which I don't want) so I passed on it. Supposedly I am number 1 on their wait list... not sure how long the list is.

Our local dealership had a $2995 "Admin" fee tacked on to the sticker of their first & only 2010. What I've heard is that all Southeast Toyota (SET) dealers are getting 1 2010 (which they did in late May).....allocations will dictate thereafter. My theory is that they are "marking up" these first cars to actually discourage anyone from buying it....that way they get to keep it on the lot as a demo unit until they can get their allocation......if someone's crazy enough to actually pay the $3K markup (not to mention the $1K in other fluff distributor installed options) then they'll eat it up and take the profit from the sucker.

I brought a Prius V w/ATP in Classic Silver from Mossy Toyota on Mission Bay Dr in Pacific Beach CA at MSRP. No markup what-so-ever. I am very happy with my buying experience at Mossy Toyota.

Everyone's free to sell at whatever pricing makes sense to their bottom line. If you have a problem with paying over window, then don't do it. That's an important message to send - walk away and find someone who will sell for the right pricing to you. If that's MSRP then so be it. The markup in this car is a lot less than we all expected, so they are trying to adjust their financial needs as a dealership with their market.

I'm not surprised that Poway does markups. Their higher management just does things that way. The more people pay their markups over window, the more they will feel justified in doing it. Hell, I ought to know. I was at Carson for damn near a decade. We all sold Prius at over-window off and on since gen II arrived and it was a management requirement. When the guy who signs your check says "you want this model car to sell? Get this much for them..." then you simply do.

OK now you gotta know that's ridiculous.

He's as free to sell his car at $3000 OVER sticker price as he is to sell a car for $3000 UNDER sticker price.

    :)

    My 2c.

It's their car they can ASK what they choose. None of us gets upset by buying under invoice etc. As Ms. Whitmire said the management sets the price.
That being said I would have asked for a test drive. On this test drive I would have told them I was trading my present Prius and had financing in place. NEVER talk price. I would then try to set a new WORLD RECORD for length and time of said test.
Upon return take the business card and politely leave.

I got my paperwork for my IV w/ solar (on Pyxis Leader). MSRP flat. I would have had no trouble waiting if they even suggested an additional mark-up over MSRP. I want one, but I'm not willing to line their pockets b/c of greed.
