"This vehicle is equipped with ... computers that will record certain data, such as:
    -engine speed
    -accelerator status...
-operation status of the driving assist systems...
    -images from the camera
Your vehicle may transmit the data recorded in these computers.....
Toyota will not disclose ...data to a third party except:
-with the consent of the vehicle owner...
-in response to a request by the police, a court of law or a government agency
-for use by Toyota in a lawsuit
-for research purposes where the data is not tied to a specific vehicle or vehicle owner
Recorded image information can be erased by your Toyota dealer.
The image function can be disabled. However, if the function is disabled, data from when the pre-collision system operates will not be available." -Toyota 2019 Prius Prime owner's manual, p. 10.

Is this a concern to any owners? It smacks of a surveillance state.

The black box? It’s been on all cars since around 2000 or 2001.

The camera? It’s just part of the PCS for collision reconstruction and improvement of the PCS. Of course they can also use it if someone decides to sue Toyota because they claim PCS failed to prevent the collision.

Not sure I’d sweat the car as much as I would the smartphone in your pocket.

I'd be even more concerned about smart speakers!! In fact, I am more concerned about them.

Probably just need to throw out your phone, tv, computer, and car. And don't go outside. That's about the only way to stay under the radar these days.

Yap, Big Brother is watching you. At least for my trim level, there is no telematics to transmit data over air. Only Advanced has that ability. Unless someone connect directly to ECU to pull that data, it stays within the car, I think.

If I recall correctly, a few years ago when there was the floor mat "issue", it was disclosed that Toyota had the only 2 copies in the US of the software to read the black box data.
It does not necessarily mean your data is getting sent to Toyota, They "hold the keys" for decrypting that data stored in the black box.

Looking at some of these threads I think some people wish the Prime had better protection on the rear end. :D

Didn't I see a posting on priuschat of a Prime owner creating a video on his laptop of images taken through the windshield camera?

Not that I ever saw or heard of. Sounds like a major project.

Dash cam is much much easier. And there are boatloads of those videos available.
