Violent engine shaking at startup. Miss fire codes all cylinders

    Interesting little device. I assume the electrical connection opens the injector so the solvent can flow through.

    Knock on wood, I am still on the OE water pump on mine. I have not seen coolant temp higher then 195, and that was on a 5.5 hour highway trip at 75+mph.

    You supply 12volts to the injector, that is what opens the injector...

    I’ve examined 3 seasoned water pumps from the Gen3 and found that each one has notable resistance on the impeller when compared to the replacement Aisin;).

    How to test that while in the car, possibly Techstream and if it has a way to monitor voltage draw on the pump, you might see something there if you had a baseline for comparison :).

    But I don’t and just went the preventative replacement route(y).

    Actually I was wondering about bench testing since I have it out. Something involving resistance or current draw, etc. But I suppose it would need a load to be properly evaluated...

    EDIT: Wait, I may have misunderstood your first comment. Are you saying the noticeable resistance to turning the impeller is a bad thing? I interpreted it the other way around, that the replacements didn't have the necessary resistance the OEMs had.

    I’m saying that the new pump impeller rotated smoothly without resistance and more revolutions.

    The pump taken out of service had notable resistance and less revolutions.

    Have you changed the coils over the plugs? Bit more expensive but a possibility. I'm in a little different of a situation. But I always look at things compared to an engine replacement. If the engine cost 3-500, and it cost 500 to put an engine in, I try to avoid repairs once they reach $1,000.

    All of the plugs I've changed on these suffer from valve cover leaks and have a little bit of a hard startup. What you describe is a lot worse, so I'd try to clean out the egr system, throttle body, and change the plugs again because it's easy to do. Good luck.

    Don't know the efficacy of rotating the spark plug coils around, or replacing them, but in the few years here I've been reading here, it seems like everyone tries this first, and it never works. Just rotating them at least doesn't cost anything.

    I thought about ignition first, but it didn't seem to explain why the car would run perfectly once it got over the initial 5 second extreme rough episode at each startup, and also that it would only be a rough start if the engine was off for at least 5 minutes.

    This seemed more in line with the theory that something was dripping into the cylinders.

    Then I looked into the cylinders with the plugs removed and saw a small puddle of pink coolant in Cylinder 2. So I had more confidence that the head gasket was leaking.

    Whether or not this was the real problem (or the whole problem) I don't know yet. Guess I'll find out this weekend...

    Just some thoughts regarding EGR:
    I cleaned the EGR pipe and cooler best I could yesterday (I can't see how anything passed through that cooler full of crud). I've read so many accounts of the need to clean the EGR circuit, but I really can't imagine how this could be as big a problem as it is made out to be. How can a cruddy or even clogged EGR circuit be a problem? I mean, if we just shut the pipe completely wouldn't the engine run even better? Of does this make some sensor unhappy somewhere that causes the engine to run poorly? Doesn't a clogged (closed) EGR path mean less crap is dumped into the intake manifold for the engine to digest? I would think the main problem with EGR is when the valve doesn't close enough rather than too little flow.

    Anyway, Head is on, cam assembly is in, timing set, timing cover is on, valve cover is on.

    Awesome. Since you are not in a hurry, wait 24 hours before filling with oil. This way you can be certain that the RTV has fully-cured.

    Next chance to work on it will be Saturday.
    Do you recommend cleaning the intake manifold? Looks like it could use it.

    While mine was apart, I let the intake and EGR cooler soak in a container filled with OxyClean and water. I used a two pound tub of OxyClean when mixing mine up. Then after several days of soaking, I hosed them out with brake cleaner.

    IT WORKS!!!!!!!!

    Started right up. After lifters pumped up it was nice and quiet. And the best part, NO SHAKING UPON RESTART!!

    Still have to put back a bunch of stuff including engine mount, but looks like a total success.
